Spain's Trans Law

^Spain is to allow people to change their gender without having a medical consultation or a diagnosis of gender dysphoria in a move which has split women’s groups and even the left-wing government.

The so-called Trans Law, which is to get its first reading in parliament this month, will allow people from the age of 16 upwards to alter their sex on official identity documents so that they are male, female or non-binary.^

Oh my god. Please tell me that article is satire! If it's not, then this is terrifying for the women and children of Spain.

Al77 · 03/02/2021 22:36

It's proposed. Not passed yet

Spain are going full Marxist though since Pedro Sanchez and identity politics are just communism rebranded (dealing with invisible social hierarchy's rather than economic ones) so it's quite likely. See Debbie Heyton's perceptive article: www.spectator.co.uk/article/spain-s-transgender-wars-are-turning-nasty

They have been gearing up for this for a while. The Feminist Party was expelled from the coalition early last year - for wrong-think / hate speech. Apparently they had noticed the importance of sex which is, of course, beyond the pale.

Similarly, prisoners can choose the jail according to their nominated gender

Why do people pretend not to see the problems with this???

I still don't understand how this ideology has become so powerful in so many countries so quickly. Obviously transgender people shouldn't be denied housing, jobs or healthcare or be subject to violence, but how have so many people leapt from that to giving gender identity precedence over sex, even in situations where it has a huge negative impact?

Also, I thought that was going to be a surprisingly balanced article but then it just stopped abruptly after mentioning that feminists were unkeen, not giving any concrete examples of why.

LastTrainEast · 03/02/2021 23:48

It does read like satire.

"Tough fines of up to €150,000 will be levied against those convicted of trying to carry out LGBT conversion therapy." Well that ought to mean people trying to trick young girls into thinking they are trans but it probably means disagreeing with this law in any way earns you a fine as you are pressuring people and making them feel unsafe.

There's another thread about this, with a link to this article in the Telegraph. archive.is/VDKnv

The Telegraph article says a bit more about what the feminists are objecting to:

Several Spanish feminist organisations have formed the Alliance Against the Erasure of Women in protest against the plan, saying they fear that the elimination of sex as a biological category “renders invisible the main element on which structural inequality against women is based” and makes social policies aimed at women potentially useless.
