Which brands are too woke for my custom?

TheBuffster · 02/02/2021 12:04

Following the Innocent doubling down on we protect everyone from discrimination apart from women bs I was wondering who else I should be avoiding and why.

So far my list is
Innocent (woke Twitter pandering)
Coca cola (subsidiary of innocent)
Flora (withdrew advertising from Mumsnet)
Oatly (guardian as)

Any others I should know of?
Thanks 😊

It strikes me that a lot of these companies just like the kudos of an inclusive 'mark'.

Does a biological women inclusive mark exist? I'd buy products that sported it.

The Morning Star.

Surely this is one of our few friends on the left? I know they backed down over a feminist cartoon last year, under the usual onslaught by TRAs. But I don't think they've banned the cartoonist, or published anything misogynist? I admire those (like the Spectator) who stand up to the bullies, but I wouldn't boycott anyone for caving in -- only for actively supporting the misogynists.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 02/02/2021 17:30

@Tanith

I'd like to see the justification, as the Op has done, rather than simply naming firms.
Yes. At the moment it's just a bunch of names which mean nothing and I don't really have the time nor the inclination to spend time ages researching every brand mentioned.
ThatIsNotMyUsername · 02/02/2021 17:33

I think most of the brands noted have had threads on here at the time, so it’s more of a reminder to some people.

Sexnotgender · 02/02/2021 18:09

@SingingLoud

The usual bullshit. I’m sure there was something else but I can’t find it.

Tanith · 02/02/2021 18:19

"I think most of the brands noted have had threads on here at the time, so it’s more of a reminder to some people."

Yes, but some are already challenging some of the names. If you think it's important enough to name a brand for failing to support women, you surely can manage a quick line to say why you've included them.

@SquirrelFan

Well, JK Rowling better start writing faster, because I'm running out of books!
I've already run out and I am sad. Wish I read slower !

Hmmm, I’m torn on this one, I think I can accept “women and transmen menstruate”, at least they are still using “women” not calling me a menstruator.

Or is that just the thin end of the wedge?... I don’t know.

Apollo440 · 02/02/2021 18:41

The Morning Star is definitely GC.

Idratherberude · 02/02/2021 18:43

Stella was sacked and cancelled over the Morning Star cartoon. They haven't had her back.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/02/2021 02:39

John Lewis and Marks were for changing rooms being mixed sex iirc.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 03/02/2021 03:04

I thought I'd found the holy grail of period products recently. Checked out their Instagram. Found posts with men advertising their products because "not just women bleed" or something. Checked out the Instagram page of the man in question. He lists himself as being "a pretty boy. Bisexual. Gender neutral".
Now ill accept that women and trans-men menstruate. And those trans-men might struggle with being called women (although the one I know personally is fully accepting of their female body and while they prefer they/them pronouns knows that "woman" and "female" are perfectly acceptable words to appear on period products). What i don't accept is trans-women being used to advertise these things. Because they don't need them (unless I've missed something?)

Oh yea... the company is called ohne.

Nickmoooooo · 03/02/2021 03:53

M and s passion fruit Swiss rolls are delicious btw

CaraDuneRedux · 03/02/2021 07:13

Mind you M&S got a bit hoist on their own petard. Having made such a fuss about how woke they were having gender neutral changing rooms, they did indeed become brand of choice of underwear for a certain type of customer who started filling their review pages with glowing references about how the design of their knickers allowed for easier tucking and the stretchy lace panels covered all sorts of things.

Before long these reviews were outnumbering their traditional customer base 3 or 4 to 1. Even the woke brand managers at M&S realised this might not play well with the majority of their customers, so have removed the review option on their underwear pages.

The biggest irony with Cheeky Wipes taking this stance is that they don't actually make a "mens style" period pant. So they might have their woke social media posts, but can I get some comfortable boxer shorts to wear on a 13 hour hospital shift during my period? No I can't.

I'm willing to bet there isn't actually a demand for it... It's all people with she/her in their profile cheering at the erasing of women.

AlfonsoTheSensible · 03/02/2021 10:33

Useful thread. Thank you.

Equally ironic is info on Web pages regarding period underwear, that they completely avoid using the word woman and the only reference to any sex is when they do do a "boyshort"

Sexnotgender · 03/02/2021 11:24

From memory cheeky wipes originally did a ‘becoming a woman’ pack for girls getting their first period. Obviously that got them absolutely vilified and they apologised and said they’d “do better”.
They then posted the message I put above in the thread. Immediate capitulation.

To be honest @DownWhichOfLate I'm quite happy with men wearing clothes traditionally associated with women.
I'm less happy with the implication that said man must be a woman for sporting said look. Monsoon doesn't there seem to be making a statement either way so will reserve judgement unless proven otherwise.

In fairness I hate the ‘you’re a woman now’ bullshit when you get your first period, even as a woman who is happy to be one.

PotholeParadies · 03/02/2021 15:15

SquirrelFan and JKRismyhero, we've got a positive thread somewhere of authors who've bravely taken a GC stance, if you need stuff to read.

Being much lower profile than JK, they really need the GC market to throw our weight behind them.

TheBuffster · 03/02/2021 15:19

Could someone link the authors thread that sounds good.

To be honest I think the main thing the Monsoon advert shows us is the difference in expectations for female versus male models. The female modelling is your typically young, thin, pretty which is the bread and butter of the industry which they never deviate from except to make a point.

The author recommendations are mixed in with other suggestions, but it'll give you something to read while you wait for your Waterstones order to arrive. Grin
