Take a drink - another drinks company goes ultra-woke.

I second oat milk from Aldi.
What a load of patronising crap.

JollyAndBright · 01/02/2021 10:07

We stopped buying oatly last year when they sold out a chunk of their company to a corporation who not only also partially own one of the biggest companies whose sole purpose is deforestation in the Amazon but their CEO was also a major financial supporter of trump.

There was a big deal about it at the time but I’m shocked by how many people seemed to forget.
I don’t care how good their products are, there are always alternatives, I will not support their underlying messages.

highame · 01/02/2021 10:09

They forget that most of us boomers were brought up 'without'. We didn't come from privilege, we just took the opportunities as they presented themselves. We were fortunate in that there was an shortage of workers and that the structure was such that we could climb the ladder to better pay and better jobs, regardless of education. Whereas now, everyone needs a degree and the left behinds are now at greater disadvantage than they were in the age of the boomer

DeaconBoo · 01/02/2021 10:10

@Graciebobcat

DDs can't criticise my green credentials- they are the ones wanting the heating turned up and leaving all the lights on. I go round turning all the lights off and turning the thermostat down Grin
I mean the thing is that's a decades-long standing joke - it's enough of a "type" that everyone recognises the sitcom dad going round turning the thermostat down (and recognising my dad in myself when i started doing it! )
zanahoria · 01/02/2021 10:19

Oatly is just thin gruel that has been rebranded

bobby81 · 01/02/2021 10:19

I don’t know what these companies are thinking, who signs this stuff off?!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2021 10:21

Yes, my DM was the light offer/ door shutter in my 60s childhood. (No central heating, no thermostat). The main determinant is almost certainly 'who pays the bills'.

Grin I was vaguely wondering if people ever use oat milk when they're making porridge, and if so why? And also whether it lacks fibre, which is imo the main point of oats.
zanahoria · 01/02/2021 10:28

The profit on Oatley must be astronomical, mainly water, oats are about the cheapest food to buy —75p a kilo in the shops, then a few very minor ingredients.

iguanadonna · 01/02/2021 10:30

Oatly has a nasty bitter aftertaste.

Now I know why.

I've been buying alternatives for a while now, and shan't be tempted back.

PegLegAntoine · 01/02/2021 10:33

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen woke used as a positive word.

MarshaBradyo · 01/02/2021 10:34

Idiots

MichelleofzeResistance · 01/02/2021 10:34

Sigh.

'K.

Another freshly politicised product I shan't be voting for. Have a nice life Oatly.

zanahoria · 01/02/2021 10:37

water, oats 10%), rapeseed oil, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphates, iodised salt, vitamins (D2, riboflavin, B12)

www.oatly.com/int/products/oat-drink

3 dessert spoonfuls of oatmeal
1 pint of water
a little salt

@PegLegAntoine

I actually hate the use of it as a putdown. It's not really any different from "political correctness" before it became a right-wing sneer. "Woke" originated with the Black community iirc and means being politically aware and pro social justice. There's nothing wrong with being woke, it's like "doing good" but it's somehow bad to be a "do-gooder"! It's the fact that being politically aware has now become linked, in some cases, with aggressive silencing movements and now, as we are seeing, anti-women movements. But that's the politics themselves, not "being aware" of them or wanting to effect social change.

Sorry bit garbled but hope you get the gist.

Justhadathought · 01/02/2021 10:41

Do children and teens read The Guardian? Most people whose parents came of age in the 90s mostly won't be that old yet. I would have thought the parents themselves were more The Guardian's age demographic

Indeed! And do they buy Oatly? at £1.80 a carton it is not cheap...and it is me doing all of the buying in our household.

Harmarsuperstar · 01/02/2021 10:44

I'm the (mid 40s) vegan in our house. My son would much prefer cow's milk but I buy various plant milks including oatly (son lives the chocolate one).
Oatly, it's the uncool parents who do the shopping. Have a bit of respect. I won't be buying oatly again I'm afraid.

peak2021 · 01/02/2021 10:59

I have never bought any of their products. I am glad this is the case.

I want to be known by my name.

Vermeil · 01/02/2021 11:05

Oatly seem to be using a series of terrible tumblr level articles in the Graun as advertising atm. They keep popping up on fb and the comment ratio is baaaaaaad. I’ve even reported a couple for their horrendous ageism. I’m really hoping Oatly get burned for it, they must be turning off so many potential customers in a desperate grab for woke points.

Justhadathought · 01/02/2021 11:34

I have never bought any of their products. I am glad this is the case

I have been buying their barista range for over a year or so now......it seems the most popular too. The shelf is often empty of it. However, a few other companies have woken up to this and have developed their own barista ranges, including Alpro, M&S and others

KellyanneConway · 01/02/2021 11:50

My 23 year old daughter buys her own oat milk (we have a milkman). She loves me and does not give a shit how "woke" I am. She will continue to buy whichever oat milk is the cheapest and situated in the most convenient location.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 01/02/2021 12:15

They have blundered into a complex debate about trans politics with no thought about how their customer base will react.
Ageist crap and as usual not a thought for the female customers /parent base who actually buy this stuff.

BoogieFeet · 01/02/2021 12:29

Oh well, no more Oatly Barista for me then and it’s one of my weekly purchases. At least it’ll save me a few quid. Don’t these companies realise who actually buys their products? I doubt next year my then teenage DS will want to be responsible for the choice/purchase of fake milk or anything else for that matter. There’s an outside chance that if I stopped buying pizza/ice cream he might become interested, but not at a brand level, and he wouldn’t be offering to pay for it...

Frodont · 01/02/2021 12:36

The Moma barista is just as nice.

I am not particularly bothered about pronouns (sorry!) but I found the ageism quite cruel.

Flippin · 01/02/2021 12:37

Uh-oh another Oatly household here. Plenty of alternatives for us, thankfully
