It's annoying. Actual journalists publishing this sort of crap gives it a legitimacy it doesn't deserve.

My guilty pleasure is the occasional read of BuzzFeed but every Harry Potter based article has some bullshit disclaimer about how if JK hurt your feelings you can get help or something. And yesterday it published an article about women being overlooked or minimised when men were present, except the first line of the article is 'If you don't identify as a man, chances are blah blah...'

In an article about minimising women's voices. Just aaaaargh.

Io9 was my guilty pleasure for years. Oh well - just wanted a virtual scream!

What's interesting is they link to their own article as proof of Rowling's "transphobia", which in turn is composed entirely of grasping at straws. My favourite of which is apparently bringing up political violence by trans activists (even by mistake) is evidence of transphobia.

Hmmm.
"Of course, any mention of Harry Potter these days bears a bit of a dark mark. In recent years, the author has revealed herself to be a transphobe ...".
Is that actionable?

I'm not sure - io9 is American so wouldn't fall under our libel laws? They seem confident enough to keep repeating easily refutable claims as fact.

What I find particularly objectionable is that the article practically salivates over the possibilities of more spin offs, whilst regretting that 'she will make money off it'.
How outrageous. A woman puts her talent and effort into writing a series of books, and a pretty solid imaginary world, and then has the TEMERITY to expect to earn money from her work! What a selfish cow.

I think they were part of Gawker (which also owned Jezebel) and the whole brand (minus the actual Gawker blog) got bought out by someone else and taken over by children.

Jezebel was supposed to be an actual feminist site but now seems to hate biological women completely.

Yeah, it's across the whole of the Gawker network as far as I can tell. Kotaku (gaming) will post about the upcoming Hogwarts game but they always have to make sure they mention (read: devote over half the article to) what a proven transphobe Rowling is. And Jezebel (feminism/pop culture) is all trans all the time nowadays.

I read on BBC News today that JK Rowling gave over £1m towards Covid and domestic violence charities recently. God forbid she make money from her creation and then checks notes give it to charity...

They never say why it's disgusting or why she's transphobic. They have no idea.

Emperor's New Clothes. Of course they can't say why she's transphobic, because obviously everyone can see it, so they don't need to say it. If you don't know why it's transphobic, then you must be transphobic too. Shh. Stop asking questions. Just be kind, woman!

In the story, those who couldn't see how stunning the fabric looked were seen as stupid and not fit for their office.

It's a little insane just how much good a person can do in the world for it all to be wiped out in the minds of Gawker journalists- io9, Jezebel and Kotaku - because that person stands up for women's rights.

It wasn't until last summer that Rowling really made her anti-transgender feelings clear, when she released a lengthy screed on her website outlining her "fears" of "trans activism." For a woman who made billions using the written word, it was a shockingly unreadable piece, full of pseudoscientific nonsense to dress up undeniable bigotry. It was also a pivot sure to shock her audience. The "Harry Potter" series was beloved by readers because it preached messages of tolerance and inclusivity. The evil Voldemort and his followers are characterized as believing in wizarding purity, an unsubtle stand-in for eugenics. And yet, here was the woman credited with turning a whole generation of readers into progressives, suddenly, and loudly, declaring that intolerance was sometimes acceptable. Worse, Rowling hasn't let it go, circling back every few weeks to remind everyone that she is still dedicated to the transphobic cause.

Don't think they've read her essay, have they? And I took a quick look at her Twitter and she hasn't posted in several weeks, and that was in praise of the Covid vaccine.

Small mercies - at least this is filed under opinion.

Wow, that NBC piece is a disgrace, "opinion" or no. Nonsense and falsehoods in every sentence of that quoted paragraph. And other JKR-related pieces on the site are just as bad. FWIW, the new one is getting push-back on Twitter:
