Mary Anning statue target reached

Target reached to commission the statue thanks to a 13 year old girl. Nice work Evie:

"A statue to Mary Anning, a fossil hunter and palaeontologist once “lost to history” but now considered a significant female force in science, is finally to be erected after a crowdfunding campaign by a teenage girl.

Evie Swire, 13, was nine years old when she first heard of Anning, who was born into a humble family in 1799 near Evie’s Lyme Regis home in Dorset. The schoolgirl was outraged to discover there was no statue.

Now, despite setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic, Evie’s campaign has raised £70,000 – enough to commission the statue. It is hoped it can be unveiled in Lyme Regis in May 2022 on the anniversary of Anning’s birthday."

Excellent, Mary Anning Rocks!... Slogan on one of the campaign t-shirts. Finished 'The Fossil Hunter' by Shelly Emling just before Xmas, really well written & interesting even about stuff I thought I already knew. Felt like I really knew what Anning's life was like after it & how many world class fossil finds she made.

Oh, how wonderful! I have just learned of Mary Anning as my eldest is studying her in English and he is finding her story fascinating. As am I.
He will be chuffed to hear this.

HectatesCats, there are several books about Anning but this one really draws the reader in to what Mary's world was like.

Deborah Cadbury has written the Dinosaur Hunters, which is another great read with plenty of info about Anning but it also goes into a lot more detail about other male fossil finders from the time.

Well deserved! Just don't let the Mary Wollstonecraft sculptor do the statue.

(Hope they get an ichtyosaur on there - Anning discovered at least one in fossilised form. One of the dinosaurs that stuck in my mind from school for some reason).

What’s the chances of this one being naked too? Could a female design the statue this time?

My 7 year old DD has recently told me about Mary Anning after they discussed her at school, I had never heard of her before! She will be very excited to see this when its erected 😊
