I don’t think this has been posted here today?

Usual story- 18 year olds being prescribed cross sex hormones after only one one hour session, all within the guidelines so appears to be legal (I’d argue the guidelines need to be changed to ensure the best interests of what can be vulnerable young people from complex backgrounds are met, and how can this be done in 60 minutes?)

How can that be ethical or legal? I cant imagine any legit counsellor claiming they have the whole story and coming up with a radical treatment plan after a one hour consultation.

I hope to God our mental health services improve sharpish, because in a few years time there's going to be an influx of people who were catastrophically failed needing access to them.

And no doubt we won't see the current cheerleaders of this ideology for dust when that shit hits the fan and the ideology is out of fashion...

Perhaps Psychology Councils and Regulators need to give good guidelines and not just a one sided, one size fits all. I don't think an hour could be good enough to give all the downsides along with a full history and a questioning attitude, but maybe if you are doing an affirmation approach you only need maybe thirty minutes, so could cut back on that hour easily (that's sarcasm btw)

Presumably people like Dr Lorimer will have substantial liability insurance for all the detransitioners who will be able to use evidence like "a one hour consultation" when they successfully sue for all the damage done to their bodies from these untested drugs?

OvaHere · 17/01/2021 14:38

I've had to jump through more hoops than this to get prescription face cream for a skin condition.

^Well worth reading.

Lorimer is supposed to represent the more responsible end of the 'gender care' industry. I believe the prison service uses him as an expert?

I'm sure he does, didn't he turn up at the launch of the detransitioners advocacy network in Manchester? standpointmag.co.uk/speaking-up-for-female-eunuchs/

I find this kind of statement disturbing

The treatment delivers oestrogen or testosterone to begin the physical process of transitioning to live as the opposite sex.

It is perpetuating the myth that taking such hormones is a method of actually changing sex. Also, that one must have these magic hormones in order to live by the gendered expectations of the opposite sex, which is obviously a load of total arse.

StrippedFridge · 17/01/2021 19:09

Those teenagers seemed to be unaware of the side effects and unaware that it is an experimental treatment with little evidence of its efficacy. They seemed to believe the hormones definitely would be the solution for their distress.

I wonder how on earth they could come out of a robust care process being so uninformed and/or blasé about the likely outcomes of this experimental treatment. I am sure Lorimer will be able to explain if he ever has to explain it in court like the Tavistock.
