www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9117995/Actress-refuses-appear-Womans-Hour-accusing-host-Emma-Barnett-degrading-comments.html

An actress refused to appear on Woman's Hour this morning after accusing host Emma Barnett of making 'degrading and vile' comments about her.

Kelechi Okafor was set to talk on the BBC Radio 4 show to discuss the #MeToo movement with new presenter Emma Barnett.

But as the programme was live on air, the Nigerian-British actress revealed she had come off the show, writing: 'Because what I've just had to witness is absolutely degrading and vile.'

Posting a video to Instagram, she said: 'I won't be going on Woman's Hour now. The host didn't realise her mic was on as she was talking s* about me to the producers.'

Seems she stormed off before she was called out on her antisemitic, racist comments.

How can EB be condemned for being more on the ball with KO's anti-semitism than LS's comments about BLM when KO wasn't there to be confronted about it?

Just a random thought as I eat my lunch, and that is that any woman in the public sphere who is considering making a public statement has to take into account that once she's said it she's likely to have it raised in every interview and every discussion for the rest of her life. And that's why so few women are prepared to do it. It's perfectly legitimate for journalists and interviewers to ask about it, too. We all have to be held accountable for what we say or write — and that includes JKR and KO.

Besides, we know from the article in the Jewish Chronicle how KO has handled being asked about her anti-semitism in the past.

That time she immediately tried to pivot to attacking the Jewish community for not doing enough against racism. I think this was more of the same.

She didn't confront LS about her racism when she was right there to be confronted about it. That tells me all I need to know.

How? How do you know she wouldn't have been equally rubbish about KO on the spot?

I'm not Jewish but felt the racist sting in KO's comments precisely because I have experienced other racism and could empathise with how Jewish people feel about it. If EB's position is to only pull up racism that affects her, we'll that's kind of racist.

Well, it looks like that's KO's own position- she can see the racism that affects her and perpetuates it against other communities.

I was assuming you were a longtime member who'd namechanged. Thus the phrasing.

I'm perfectly capable of calling people trolls outright if it's what I think.

I don't know. That's why I asked. Confused

PotholeParadies · 07/01/2021 13:31

That is, I didn't know why you'd nc'ed therefore the question.

Not, I don't know why else. (Seeing as I nc frequently...)

Llama,

Don't want for you to feel attacked by multiple posters, but the accusation of " glibness" is is just not the case. Many of us have spent a life time engaged with various liberation struggles, and certainly with thinking about, and considering, them quite profoundly. This tends, after time, to shift your perspective to what could be seen as a more global, over-arching viewpoint of history and historical events. Which is what I was getting at.

Maybe in a few weeks time, WH can revisit the subject but with someone other than KO. She's hardly the only black feminist out there.

RozWatching · 07/01/2021 14:07

I personally imagine she was more excited about taking down an uppity black woman, who gives her the right to take up space in feminist discourse?

That's quite a leap without knowing what EB said. I can imagine she was incensed by KO's antisemitic comments but I'd like to know what she actually said before writing her off as a racist.

Justhadathought · 07/01/2021 14:08

The transatlantic slave trade has a unique position in its scale, causes and impact in the modern world and IMO to instantly respond with glib comparisons to slavery in the ancient world is just one step up from “all lives matter”ing

RozWatching · 07/01/2021 14:11

That would be great. And maybe the WH production team needs a refresher in the basics.
