Gender conversion 'therapy' made me suicidal. I fear for other young Nigerians

A survivor warns against the harmful practices many are forced to undergo to try to change their sexuality or gender identity

"I’m 43 now. Still gay, still a trans woman. "

Confused If they are a transwoman, how are they also gay? Surely they are either a gay man or a straight transwoman? How can the article ignore this contradiction? It talks about gay conversion therapy, nowhere does it refer to conversion therapy to stop them being trans.

Or is there something I'm missing here?

It’s the same lack of logic with Marsha P Johnson, only more offensive. At least this person is describing themselves however they want which of course I have no issue with.

But with Johnson he described himself as gay, and had relationships with men. So if people want to retrospectively trans him and call him a woman, how can he be a self-described gay woman if he’s sleeping with men? Surely he would have described himself as straight? I think it’s horribly offensive to use modern day ideology and lack of logic to define someone who can no longer define themselves.

The article is accurate. The person is same sex attracted and therefore gay.

Quite refreshing for a trans woman to acknowledge this.

Struggling to see how exactly the anonymous person is trans, if they are gay and have had no trans surgery or drugs because those are not available in the country where they live. What's the definition which adds trans to the gay that they clearly are?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/12/2020 18:45

Marsha P Johnson was a drag queen and is therefore deemed to be under the trans umbrella, though? What MPJ would have thought of that we don't know, because that wasn't all that much of a Thing in 1992 when MPJ died. And he fought for gay rights, not trans rights, rather specifically.

What's the definition which adds trans to the gay that they clearly are?

Am assuming they've done the social transition stuff - adopted a typically feminine name and form of attire.

As for what the difference is between a homosexual and a homosexual-transsexual... If I answer that truthfully it would get deleted. Let's just say people tend to internalise the mores of their society. I note this person lives somewhere that criminalises homosexuality.

It's a trifle hyperbolic though, claiming that their existence is illegal in Nigeria. Especially as the clicky blue link at that point in the text goes to another Graun article detailing the law in question, which bans gay relationships - not a good thing, by any stretch of the imagination, but a long way from it being illegal to actually exist.

Of course the article is accurate. It’s the fact that if this article went through the Stonewall’s Ministry of Truth it would have been altered and this person would have been declared straight because Stonewall is homophobic and believes in same-gender attraction, not same-sex attraction.

NiceGerbil · 28/12/2020 22:56

Patriarchal society is horrible to GNC /gay people shocker.

Catholicism mentioned.

This shit needs to stop. The old stonewall and other lgb groups raised awareness of the oppression gay and GNC people around the world are subjected to. That it's still illegal in many countries. And many where theoretically legal it's still very dangerous.

Why have they seemingly turned their backs on all this? Why are they not shouting about this? There is so much still to do.

In that article i take the gender piece as to do with femininity- two things. Same sex attraction. Being feminine. Not ok.

Also not to do with trans as it has become over here.
