Women’s refuges

There’s a Christmas Appeal for a woman’s refuge charity pop U.K. on my Facebook.
I always look through the comments to see if these charities are legit or whatever. I was really aghast at the number of people moaning it wasn’t called a “persons” refuge because men get abused too. Many wouldn’t contribute because of this.. In fact one person quoted figures of male abuse at 46%.
There was a post I “liked” because they pointed out that men were just as entitled to get a charity set up themselves etc. However several felt that was biased and sexist.
Where are the stats p,ease so I can help people out with the truth.

Here are some awful, but useful statistics on domestic violence from Women's Aid (bear in mind that women's refuges provide sanctuary from men who are likely to be trying to track partners down, it would not be appropriate to also house men in these spaces):

  • For the year ending March 2016 to the year ending March 2018, 74% of victims of domestic homicide (homicide by an ex/partner or family member) were female.

  • The overwhelming majority of female domestic homicide victims are killed by men; of the 270 female victims of domestic homicide for the year ending March 2016 to the year ending March 2018, the suspect was male in 260 cases. (ONS, 2019)

  • In 218 of the 270 female domestic homicide cases between the year ending March 2016 and the year ending March 2018, the suspect was a partner or ex-partner. 43 male victims were killed by a partner or ex-partner in the same time period. (ONS, 2019)

  • In the year ending March 2019, the majority of defendants in domestic abuse-related prosecutions were men (92%), and the majority of victims were female (75%). 16% of victims were male and in 10% of cases the sex of the victim was not recorded. (ONS, 2019).

Amazing that they can't see how sexist it is to assume that any caring, charitable stuff should be done by women.

Also such a lack of empathy there. Male victims of intimate partner abuse, whether it's a partner of the same or opposite sex, need their own spaces. There's a shame that comes with any kind of abuse, but the shame of being 'weak' as a man in this society - that is particular to men.

This is a time to bring up whataboutery. Every one should read it once a year, and in a minute someone smarter than me will come and link the article.

I woke up on Thursday to find I had sent that all over the shop. I'm not sorry. Wink
