Medicalised pathway for children is not a "standard of care"

Interesting thread about WPATH admitting that their treatments for children/adolescents including puberty blockers, wrong sex hormones, and sterilizing surgeries are NOT STANDARDS OF CARE.

The lawyers have had a word and now it has been downgraded to "guidelines" and so the buck stops with the individual doctor.

They're starting to admit it's experimental.

The original thread has been unrolled and archived, you might find this version easier to read;

I hope the charlatans involved with the creation of this climate of medicalisation without due diligence are exposed, sued and have to answer for the damage they have done, and been allowed to do to peoples lives.

Whether by their own lack of care, stupidity or more sinister motives, they should not have been allowed to affect practice to such an extent in any event without safeguards in place. Who let them have free rein wreak havoc with children's lives?

Diane Ehrensaft's talk from WPATH 2018. Thread by 4th Wave Now.

Diane Ehrensaft thinks babies can be transgender and will express this by doing something like pulling bows out of their hair or undoing a onesie to make it into a dress.

I can't think of any other professional body which has patient representatives at an exec level. The board of WPATH has an unusual number of people who have no qualifications or science background.

Lived experience is important, but, it is not everything and it's not enough to build standards of care or guidelines on.

NancyDrawed · 22/12/2020 17:53

But the WPATH guildelines were specifically mentioned at the Keira Bell v Tavi hearing. Tweet from Newsnight's Hannah Barnes from the hearing:

"Tavistock barrister says NHSE service specification requires GIDS to act in line with WPath guidelines and therefore not possible to deviate from those without being in breach of contract with NHSE.."

twitter.com/hannahsbee/status/1313859932589101056

So the Tavi had to act in line with the WPATH not SoC as directed by NHS England. Where does the buck stop?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 23/12/2020 12:29

With the people who's job was to apply critical thinking to guidelines which were cobbled together by biased people.

If consultant psychiatrists can't say "no" to a patient then are they competent?

@MoleSmokes

SunsetBeetch Great work archiving the evidence, ahead of the inevitable denials and frantic attempts to foist the blame on “transphobes” who are allegedly unable to appreciate “nuance”, a la all the recent “born in the wrong body” back-tracking!
Indeed. Fully expecting it to turn into a 'we never said/did this, its just transphobic lies!!!'

Squeaky bum time for the Endocrine Society?

"New statement from The Endocrine Society (cosponsored by The Pediatric Endocrine Society) explicitly opposes the politicization of gender-affirming medical care for #transgender youth and opposes legislation that would limit access to care for minors."

Hmmm! By “politicisation” they mean, “Requiring evidence that a treatment works, that its benefits outweigh its risks; preventing children being used as unwitting guinea pigs for predictably harmful medical experiments, and continuing to support homophobic parents drugging and chopping up their children to trans the gay away”. Angry

Have to rush off but this is am interesting document from the Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine: segm.org/2020_gender_medicine_highlights_SEGM

persistentwoman · 26/12/2020 15:35

That's an optimistic publication PrawnofthePatriarchy
An organisation advocating for evidence based, correctly researched medicine and research. A real shift in approach from what we have come to expect.

Fabulous links on this thread, thank you all.

I'm Saving this thread.

To be fair to maugham he does refer to them as guidelines (rather than standards of care) in his tweet in his tweet linked above. I'm not sure what the difference would be in legal or practical terms.

Good archiving everyone!
