FWR women of the year

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 10:26

It's the time of the year for lists and retrospectives, so let's compile our FWR Women of the Year.

Suggested guidelines (not rules):
No fictional women
Women valued for something more than appearance or entertainment value
Can (should?) include women who we don't all agree with or necessarily admire.

We have to include Prof Sarah Pedersen after her excellent book and webinar. I was lucky enough to go to the workshop she ran with Selina Todd at Women's Lib 2020. Amazing day!

OldLang · 20/12/2020 18:45

Rachel Rooney.

And all the women across the site who've experienced abuse, fled violence, raised their children, did the wifework, challenged the wifework, worked through a pandemic, asked for help here, shared their stories, supported other women, who've lurked in order to learn, who've posted in order to share and educate...
I think we can all agree, without posters there is no mn.
Thank you all you bunch of lovely vipers Flowers

BigGreen · 20/12/2020 19:24

Fiona McKenzie (We Can’t Consent to this) seconded! Flowers

UppityPuppity · 20/12/2020 19:33

I’ve seen two entries for Nicola Sturgeon.

Please could someone tell me why the leader of a party which is trying every route to ensure the erasure of women as a biological, social, economic and political class is included?

Their thankfully failed proposal to ensure women who are sexually assaulted and raped dont have the right for a female medic - is the grotesque conclusion of their policy - and it is on Nicola.

LM ‘for the word gender substitute sex’Flowers

And if the SNP have their way - stating a simple fact that men can’t be women, will soon be a crime.

ArabellaScott · 20/12/2020 19:58

Because she's first minister of Scotland. I didnt choose just people I like, but women who have had impact in the last year.

UppityPuppity · 20/12/2020 20:01

Because she's first minister of Scotland. I didnt choose just people I like, but women who have had impact in the last year.

Well - we can agree she’s had an impact.

Agrona · 20/12/2020 20:53

M. K. Fain for Spinster and her help on developing Ovarit.

Senator Clare Chandler.

Tinsel Angel for raising awareness of Transwidows.

Datun and the other intelligent women on this board who continue to stay strong and say ‘No’.

ArabellaScott · 20/12/2020 21:18

Yes, the wise women of FWR. So many have taught me so bloody much including object lessons in humour, resilience and open mindedness.

Abitofalark · 20/12/2020 21:27

My two have already been listed: Harriet Wistrich. I have long been an admirer - for the inspiring work she does for women at the centre for justice. Julie Bindel campaigns and works tirelessly dealing with the grimmest of women's grim lives and gets little public credit or recognition. I say she has a lot to contribute to the public good and should be in the Lords, unlike some of what we've seen get shoved in there.

It's only a couple of weeks ago that I discovered these two women are connected and that Julie Bindel was a co-founder of the centre for justice for women.

I am trying but failing to hold back about the nominations of (most of) the politicians mentioned just because they are women. Most of what politicians do and the policies they espouse work against or just plain ignore the interests of women. Aaghhh, I'd better stop. Nobody has to have my approval or opinions of that lot.

Babdoc · 20/12/2020 22:19

UppityPuppity, you beat me to it! I was also going to query the inclusion of Nicola bloody Sturgeon.
Leader of a party that is trampling all over women’s rights, has sold out to the TRAs for woke cookies and wanted to force raped women to be examined by men. Despicable.

littlbrowndog · 20/12/2020 22:25

Agree on sturgeon. She never supported women who were bein* abused like Joanna cherry

She is no hero.

She has allowed misogyny in her party to run rampant.

Men and women in snp allowed free reign to abuse feminists

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 20/12/2020 22:33

As above and

All the wonderful sheros on FWR!

bettybeans · 21/12/2020 03:53

Joan McAlpine
Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie
Johann Lamont (yes I know she's mentioned already but damn she did well!)
The whole team at ForWomenScotland
Murray Blackburn Mackenzie

Jenny Lindsay
Rosie Duffield (see Johann above)

ArabellaScott · 21/12/2020 08:06

I didn't realise the list was to be 'heroes'. Women of note who have had an impact this year, I thought.

KizzyWayfarer · 21/12/2020 08:45

Stacey Abrams, for services to democracy www.vogue.com/article/stacey-abrams-georgia-vote-turning-the-tide
Rosamund Adoo Kissi-Debrah, for children’s health www.independent.co.uk/environment/ella-adoo-kissi-debrah-air-pollution-b1775223.html

LangClegTheBeardedVulture · 21/12/2020 09:03

Stephanie Davis Arai for her work at transgender trend.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/12/2020 09:22

@ArabellaScott

I didn't realise the list was to be 'heroes'. Women of note who have had an impact this year, I thought.
I think I was hoping for a combination of : A) FWR heroes, some of whom won't be widely known. B) women who you might expect to see a women of the year list in a serious newspaper. If they might figure in a 'people of the year' list or, if they'd been a man, men of the year.

Anyone whose inclusion isn't risible.

With regard to politicians, the lack of women in the English cabinet / shadow cabinet makes it all the more difficult.

So a nomination for all the women on councils, parish councils and other bodies who work bloody hard fro their local communities.

iguanadonna · 21/12/2020 11:50

Helen Joyce - she's been relatively quiet this year because she's writing a book, but her work at the Economist has been important in preventing a mainstream respected publication from switching its brain off like so many others have done.

UppityPuppity · 21/12/2020 12:34

So a nomination for all the women on councils, parish councils and other bodies who work bloody hard fro their local communities.

Wasn’t there a female (Labour?) councillor who is an advocate for women’s rights and was trolled on twitter when the council put up a woman’s flag on IWD - which then got taken down.

Helen Joyce - yes a good nomination.

ChattyLion · 21/12/2020 14:04

I’ll add Star Sarah Field, Leeds City Councillor Star

ScrapThatThen · 21/12/2020 14:42

I would like to add Qelbinur Sidik a Uighur Muslim teacher for telling of her forced sterilisation in Xinjiang www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/04/muslim-minority-teacher-50-tells-of-forced-sterilisation-in-xinjiang-china

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 21/12/2020 14:51

Actually
I vote for JK Rowling. No one has faced the absolute venom she has this year. She's an absolute hero.

Special mentions to Julie Bindel, Dr Jessica Taylor and Alison Moyet
