It's the time of the year for lists and retrospectives, so let's compile our FWR Women of the Year.

Suggested guidelines (not rules):
No fictional women
Women valued for something more than appearance or entertainment value
Can (should?) include women who we don't all agree with or necessarily admire.

OP posts:

@Campervan69

Entertainers

Dolly Parton
Alison Moyet

Erm.....

If we are going to have a category for 1980's Pop stars who turned out to be so much more that we appreciated back when we were reading Smash Hits, I am going to nominate Tracey Thorn.
iguanadonna · 20/12/2020 11:22

Diane Abbott - one of the longest-serving MPs and valiant in the face of vicious racism and sexism.

ChattyLion · 20/12/2020 11:22

Everyone upthread and also...
Mrs A the anonymous partner in the Keira Bell JR
Harriet Wistrich and everyone at the Centre for women’s Justice
Fiona McKenzie (We Can’t Consent to this) for battling for women
Sammy Woodhouse working with government and Maggie Oliver speaking out for women
Posie Parker going into broadcasting on YouTube
Ann Sinnott taking on EHRC and hopefully starting the turning of the tide on regulatory capture
Liz Truss for spearheading an important political conversation even though I’m worried about where it’s going, we have to have these debates and Labour and Lib Dem’s continue to fail women by not doing so (lifelong Labour voter here)
Jean Hatchett, because a woman is murdered on average every 4 days as a result of domestic abuse in the UK and she raises their names
All the women propping up the National Health Service, public services, scientific and logistical work and through their work of whatever kind it is, keeping the country going, all the women keeping themselves and their families going at a time of pandemic national crisis, all the women looking after others in the community at this horrible time
All the women who will have a hard or lonely Christmas/end of this year, for any reason, this year.

Yes - often don't agree with Diane Abbott, but she has to deal with so much more crap than her peers and she has been doing it for a long time.

@iguanadonna

Karen Ingala Smith for her work on femicide and all the women working on:

www.femicidecensus.org/about/

Seconded. Always deserving appreciation but especially so this year for being one of the few principled leaders still standing in the charity sector.

Not sure the Baroness can be nominated enough. A) her decades of work for women and children and B) to think it was only earlier this year she turned her attention to this.

Heather Heying

Helen Pluckrose

WorriedForWomen · 20/12/2020 12:13

She's been mentioned already but Kathleen Stock, for maintaining intellectual nuance and showing remarkable strength in resisting what must be an almost irresistible urge to shout at idiots.

persistentwoman · 20/12/2020 12:19

What a great list of awesome women. Seconding Stephanie Davies-Arai for her quietly powerful and persistent work with Transgender Trend.

CaraDuneRedux · 20/12/2020 12:22

@ErrolTheDragon

Women senior politicians - this is a section of 'don't agree with them all on everything' but they're important on the world stage.

Angela Merkel
Kamala Harris
Jacinda Arden
Sanna Marin

Angela Merkel wins this by a country mile - head and shoulders above the rest in terms of achievements.
Al1langdownthecleghole · 20/12/2020 12:24

Donna Ockendon, for her report into Maternity Care in Shropshire.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 20/12/2020 12:27

Posie Parker for her persistence in the face of criticism from a sides.

Abigail Shriver for writing about ROGD.

MichelleofzeResistance · 20/12/2020 12:34

So many brilliant women on this list!

All my political heroes are mentioned so far, so for breadth:

Andi Oliver and Lisa Goodwin-Allen. Both magnificent chefs in a male dominated world. I've been particularly enjoying watching Lisa smash this year's Great British Menu contest and winning half the dishes in between shots of her playing with her pre-schooler.

KittyValentine · 20/12/2020 12:34

Kate Harris, Bev Jackson and Allison Bailey for publicly standing up for lesbians’ right to be same-sex attracted. They, and the LGB Alliance in general, receive a huge amount of hate for it.

everythingcrossed · 20/12/2020 12:35

Michaela Coel

nonsenceagain · 20/12/2020 12:35

broccolibush · 20/12/2020 12:44

Malahaha · 20/12/2020 12:59

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Malahaha · 20/12/2020 13:00
