It's the time of the year for lists and retrospectives, so let's compile our FWR Women of the Year.

Suggested guidelines (not rules):
No fictional women
Women valued for something more than appearance or entertainment value
Can (should?) include women who we don't all agree with or necessarily admire.

Kath Murray, Lucy Hunter Blackburn, Lisa McKenzie

Melinda Gates

Gates has spent the pandemic advocating for a more global approach to tackling it, and promoting the needs of caregivers, who have been particularly stressed by school closures and the loss of community support.

Michelle Moore and Heather Brunskill-Evans for their book and general common sense around sticking up for children. As well as all the women on this list already. Heartening to see so many!

And all the wise women of FWR who do so much to inform and fight. Thank you from a (mostly) lurker.

Can we include collectives on this glorious list? If so I'll add:
Vancouver Rape Crisis Centre for holding true to their principles in the face of vicious misogyny
WoLF for keeping on keeping on in the USA in the context of a woke left and a woman-hating right
Canadian Women's Sex-based Rights - in the heart of Gilead
The Countess didn't fight for this - standing up for women in Ireland.

NoraEphronsTurkeyNeck · 20/12/2020 16:12

Yes to everyone above, but also:

Caroline Criado-Perez,

There are so many women to be admired. Thank you to every one.

Definitely Sarah Field in Leeds

Angryresister · 20/12/2020 16:23

O missed two pages by mistake , agree with them all...

bellinisurge · 20/12/2020 16:26

JKR
Keira Bell
Rosie Duffield
Karen Davies

I'm a coward because I am afraid to speak up in public about this. Scared of losing some friends and being alienated by colleagues. And these women are actually brave and stunning

fakenina · 20/12/2020 16:31

Posie and Venice for taking no shit.

Datun · 20/12/2020 17:18

Oh my God, aren't there so many! So very many admirable women.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 20/12/2020 17:22

What a glorious idea. I'd love to see the entire list, with a short description of each woman's accomplishments.

Oh and I spotted a recurring typo - the ineffable Karen Davis spells her last name without the e.

happygolurkey · 20/12/2020 17:35

Helen Lewis

merrymouse · 20/12/2020 17:43

Yes, Helen Lewis and also Hadley Freeman and Susanna Rustin on at the Guardian.
