Puberty Blockers 101

NoCureForLove · 08/12/2020 09:33

I see the previos thread about Dr Adrian Harrops Youtube video - Puberty Blockers 101 has been deleted as 'not in the spirit'.

Sadly too the good doctor has belatedly worked out that giving viewers the ability to comment on Youtube was a very bad idea indeed. Or has worked out how to turn the comments off...

It's an important message - quite breathtaking really in view of the judgment in Bell v The Tavistock. So am re linking. Discussion 'in the spirit' shouldn't be beyond us? Smile

He has arranged his books by colour?

NancyDrawed · 08/12/2020 09:47

I wish I'd seen the comments. I imagine that the vast majority were hugely supportive and grateful? Perhaps Dr Harrop was a little embarrassed by all the praise, so turned them off.

Alternatively, perhaps Dr Harrop was a little surprised that out in the real world, not everyone thinks the way he and his pals do. And that it isn't just Mumsnet FWR users who strongly disagree with this type of medical intervention on children with gender dysphoria

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/12/2020 09:51

I've tried to watch him, but, he's too condescending for me to manage 40 minutes.

That, and the books in the background - who DOES that? Is he trying to make a rainbow?

NoCureForLove · 08/12/2020 09:53

The comments were indeed awesome! One particularly brilliant commentator watched the ehole thing and posted time stamped pithy notes on what was said. And yes, much to be said about the color coded books. "Rainbow" innit. Smile

How interesting that someone who was very deeply involved in these discussions discovered that outside his echo chamber and twitter, people still don't agree with him? And nor do three High Court judges.

Who'dathunk it?

Winesalot · 08/12/2020 09:57

Where are all the brown book covers? I look at my bookshelf and it is full of brown book covers. Or is this a new way of choosing reading material?

MichelleofzeResistance · 08/12/2020 10:05

Isn't it staggering that three judges succeeded in going through the evidence of the clinic actually leading the NHS work in this area, and come to conclusions without asking Adrian ?

It's as if he doesn't work at the Tavistock, is not a specialist in this field, has no part in the Tavistock's evidence and has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with it.

Thingybob · 08/12/2020 10:13

At about 33 mins in he says there are approximately 12.7 children in the UK under the age of 16 and a conservative estimate on the prevalence of being transgender is 0.5%. (1 in 200)

He then does his sums wrong to calculate that 0.5% of 12.7m =600,000 children (from his figures it should be 60,000)

He goes in to say that this faarrrrrr (his emphasis) exceeds the number of children living with conditions such as epilepsy. Google gives the prevalence of epilepsy in children as being 1 in 200, exactly the same as his suggested prevalence for transgenderism.

Please tell me why and how this man is a doctor?

Thingybob · 08/12/2020 10:13

*12.7 million children

Actually, he said at the beginning that he wasn't an endocrinologist, a paediatrician, or psychiatrist. Presumably he is not a High Court judge either. So my attention wavered after that. I don't think he had anything useful to add.

Melroses · 08/12/2020 10:17

Oh, and not a mathematician either, it would appear.

NoCureForLove · 08/12/2020 10:24

It's almost as if he hasn't actually read the judgment before posting this video - yesterday. Surely that would be really stupid though? Hmm

Nor have the ability to do the basic calculations which are essential for anyone working in healthcare.

You can't cock up by a factor of ten when delivering medications.

NewlyGranny · 08/12/2020 10:29

Well, you can, Thingybob, but they wouldn't usually give you the chance to do it twice! 🤦🏼‍♀️

kesstrel · 08/12/2020 10:32

Thingybob that's extraordinary. Well-spotted. The jaw-dropping self-confidence of these people, holding forth without even bothering to check their sums.

StrippedFridge · 08/12/2020 10:37

That video needs reporting as misleading or harmful given that he is stating things that are far from proven about puberty blocking drugs. What if gender questioning children or parents watched that video?! So misleading. Contradicts the court findings and the latest NHS guidance.

DickKerrLadies · 08/12/2020 10:39

When you live in a twitter block bubble and think that our censored views on FWR are indicative of 'the other side', I imagine that the people of the youtube comments sections may come as a bit of a surprise to Harrop.

It's so nice of him to copy JKR in colour-coding his bookshelves though.

MichelleofzeResistance · 08/12/2020 10:40

I keep trying to think of any other professional role where you could present yourself, under your own name, on YouTube, contradicting official guidance and court judgements like this with your own opinions, and not find yourself on the end of disciplinary procedures if not a pink slip.

Quite. I feel almost sorry for the GMC, as this will presumably add another pile to the Harrop complaint mountain.
DickKerrLadies · 08/12/2020 10:44

he said at the beginning that he wasn't an endocrinologist, a paediatrician, or psychiatrist.

Exactly what makes him think he's the person who should be doing this video then?

Grant me the confidence of a mediocre man and all that

NoCureForLove · 08/12/2020 11:04

Surely those 'modest disclaimers ' don't cancel out the authority you hold by being a medical doctor and the expertise on medical matters most people would accord that position?
