Oh my goodness, yay. Need new underwear, but I wasn't going to buy it while that policy was in place.

Glad I've waited it out this long. Might buy the cherubs some HP merchandise while I'm at it.

Al1langdownthecleghole · 08/12/2020 07:34

I agree there needs to be a public statement and an apology to the women who had raised this with them publicly.

I also hope this is a tipping point and others will follow.

To be fair given the backlash on social media I can’t blame them for quietly changing policy and not making a huge song and dance. Things are tough enough in retail.

I like M&S and have always had good service from them. I’ll take breaks like this where we can get them. It would feel churlish to insist on extensive self flagellation.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/12/2020 07:57

I’ve found alternatives for - well just a bit everything to be honest. Just as I have for my tampons, bath smellies etc.

The risk companies run is losing customers forever because they find just as good/better alternative in the meantime and change their habits (M&S knickers have been pants for a long time now).

TirisfalPumpkin · 08/12/2020 07:57

Great news. A consumer boycott is effective, but you can’t beat a letter-writing Baroness.

I’m kind of tempted by that pastel fair isle jumper, and ooh, that leather trucker jacket... and ALL of the big knickers.

MsMarvellous · 08/12/2020 08:03

I am happy to let people and companies roll back and not make a fuss. If they can't do it without receiving a whole load of sarcasm and grief it'll put more off even trying to step back.

I'm going to do some shopping at M&S and watch for others stepping back from the craziness. If we don't forgive them when they realise they're wrong we're not giving companies the space to peak. It was always going to take longer in an organisation.

highame · 08/12/2020 08:05

I am all for a bit of forgiveness, I'm not kind, it's just that we need to show that we value a change in direction. Others might follow suit if they see the positive side. Except of course for those wise women who found alternatives Smile

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/12/2020 08:06

Hmmmm - suicide stats blackmail, sad horse photos in newspapers ‘they said I couldn’t use the ladies/men’s changing room’, social media threats and harassment Vs sarcasm...

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 08/12/2020 08:10

I agree MsMarvellous, I'm going to welcome them back into the sensible fold by buying some of that cut price Prosecco Poppers mentioned.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/12/2020 08:15

Do we think John Lewis will follow? They were effing dismissive of concerns at the time.

Although i agree in principle and don’t generally boycott companies

I doubt people getting sarky with M&S will make any difference to M&S policy, they didn’t listen to complaints the first time round so I doubt they’d be phased by snark

But yeah, i do agree with msmarvellous

EwwSprouts · 08/12/2020 08:28

Thank goodness. I've been buying bits of food as they are the closest store to home. But now I can buy my Dad an M&S jumper for Christmas and me some cotton pjs.

EwwSprouts · 08/12/2020 08:29

Oh and thank you to Baroness Nichol.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/12/2020 08:38

They've added to their crimes... see the Harry Potter merchandise Smile

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/12/2020 08:41

I wonder if there will be a protest though? Now that would be a little more than snarky.

7Days · 08/12/2020 09:04

If anyone does buy anything, let them know it's because of the reversal.

Make it crystal clear that it's worth it to them.

StillAHarpie · 08/12/2020 09:18

@Coatandhat

I've just had a look at the website Harpie and the fetish reviews I saw have been edited so that it's not obvious - unless you'd seen them before, you might be puzzled by the number of likes and dislikes.
I took a look, it’s weird I did a quick check and some comments have slipped through their rewrite like the poster with ‘tv’ in the middle of their name who said they thought ‘real women’ would also find the item comfortable but yes a big clean-up.

I’ll go back to shopping in M&S as long as they keep this policy in place, however this last year my shopping habit changes have lead me to find a lot of smaller producers that I’ll continue to use. And I still feel ‘eck’ about buying knickers there tbh.

IsFinnRogersDead · 08/12/2020 09:34

"Dear Archie"

I love it.

I'd like to see their definition of single sex though.

SeaRabbit · 08/12/2020 11:24

Well quite they need to be really clear - but I do need some new bras and one of theirs is just so comfortable. And they do have some better things in now. I've been keeping an eye but not buying anything.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/12/2020 11:33

Will they change their signage then? Last time I was in it just said ‘changing rooms’ with no little man/woman signage.

Tannins · 08/12/2020 12:02

And so it begins.....

The Baroness and the Marks and Spencer Reversal.
ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/12/2020 12:06

Poo McWee isn’t very observant are they (and surely should be in class right now?)

MoanerLizzie · 08/12/2020 12:09

@ThatIsNotMyUsername Sorry to '@' you but could you tell me where you've found the holy grail of Old-School-M&S-Quality knickers? I agree M&S ones are really disappointing now and I miss the old ones.

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 08/12/2020 12:11

PooMcwee is very concerned about gender non-conforming women's access rights when it supports the argument that all sorts of PooMcwees should be allowed to get undressed alongside women. I wonder if PMW has done any other campaigning for women's rights?

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 08/12/2020 12:11

I’ll have a dig in the drawer and look at the labels. Last lot I bought was in the states (yes I am a saddo who travels halfway across the glove and goes out knicker buying!).
