Twitter blocklists?

I know there's a 'T*RF blocklist' - I subscribed to it years ago when I still thought 'trans rights' meant 'being treated fairly and not discriminated against due to one's transgender identity' and not 'rewriting reality', and can't undo it now. Is there a blocklist that GC feminists are using, does anyone know? I'm now blocked by several GC accounts despite no interaction and/or being previously able to see them.

(Not the end of the world but I'm curious!)

I used to block anyone I found that I hadn’t interacted with and had blocked me as I assumed they had useda blocklist so that might be what has happened.

SebastianTheCrab · 05/12/2020 17:02

I've never heard of GC feminists using or wanting a blocklist. Most of us are reasonable who have no problem hearing other people's views as long as they're not rude or abusive.

Maybe start a new Twitter account.

notyourhandmaid · 05/12/2020 22:52

@SebastianTheCrab yes, that's what I thought!

@StillAHarpie you're probably right. I started using blocklists on another issue to minimise random harassment, but no longer trust the people who create such things.

I have a twitter account but never tweet or re-tweet. I'm on several blacklists, presumably soley on the basis of "likes", the most recent being David Paisley's.

I vaguely recall that I was blocked from a gender critical feminist's account but I can't remember whose.

YouNoob · 05/12/2020 23:10

Not on any block list and I've only blocked one person on Twitter (MRA type, not TRA). Also what do we GC women and men need block lists for? I think our egos and mental health are robust enough to cope with people who disagree with us.

Not on any blocklist ! You're clearly not doing a very good job at this "gender critical" lark then. I don't even tweet and I'm not particularly gender critical and I'm blocked by several people eg David Paisley and Rachel McKinnon. Smile
BlackForestCake · 05/12/2020 23:47

We don't need protection from other people's opinions. But there are people who are so desperately sad and bitter that they will trawl through your tweets looking for something that they can report you for and get your account suspended. Blocks are useful in those cases.

Gingernaut · 05/12/2020 23:51

I have found that I have been blocked by people I've never interacted with.

No idea how to find out if I am on a block list though.

PotholeParadies · 05/12/2020 23:55

Within a week of being moderately gender critical on twitter, I got blocked by Natacha Kennedy né(e) Mark Hallam. I'd never interacted with them. I only realised because I couldn't read their replies to Owen Jones.

Quaagars · 06/12/2020 00:19

I don't get the point of Twitter blocklists.
Maybe block people who tweet abuse, fair enough, but a list that just automatically blocks people who follow people you don't agree with?
Not so much

I don't even know who Natacha Kennedy is and I'm blocked by her.
PotholeParadies · 06/12/2020 01:03

I only know who they are on account of a memorable thread about them on MN! Lecturer from Goldsmiths. Slight scandal about them co-authoring a paper with... themselves under their new name.

bitheby · 06/12/2020 01:40

I'm blocked by David Paisley and have no idea who this person is.

PotholeParadies · 06/12/2020 01:53

Scottish actor. Has been at the centre of a load of twitter drama involving trans rights, the SNP, Joanna Cherry, Boyz magazine and so on.

DidoLamenting · 06/12/2020 02:20

I ran a search on my username and the words "I'm blocked" to see if I'd mentioned being blocked on here. I see that I have previously been blocked by Allie Fogg , Sally Hines and India Willoughby. Fogg and Hines must have had temporary blocks in place as I can now see their tweets (although why I'd want to I have no idea)

I'm still blocked by India Willoughby; which shows how silly it is. I'm really not particularly gender critical yet I'm banned by her from reading what she has to say on this subject.

DidoLamenting · 06/12/2020 02:22

Sally Hines is such a twerp generally I'd prefer to remain on her list ; it's a compliment to be blocked by her.

Hurtandupset2 · 06/12/2020 02:27

Last time i checked (in March of this year), I was on 254 block lists for being GC. Lots of ppl I've never heard of have blocked me without me ever having any interaction with them beforehand.

It's ridiculous, I like a good debate and you can't get that in an echo chamber.

DidoLamenting · 06/12/2020 02:38

Is there a way of checking- beyond checking each individual account of someone irritating and annoying?

A further search on here shows Frankie Boyle had blocked me but like Hines and Fogg it's not permanent and as with Hines I'd be flattered to be permanently blocked by him.

PotholeParadies · 06/12/2020 02:49

Didn't even know Ally Fogg was on twitter.

Just checked and I'm not blocked by Rachel McKinnon. Unfortunately, because I saw that Rachel is being vile about Magdalen Berns' death from cancer again.

DidoLamenting · 06/12/2020 03:05

Ally Fogg has this tweeted this about Nimco Ali.

And I don't believe for 1 minute that £350 for a day's consultancy work is "a fortune" for him.

Pothole, you'll have to try harder with McKinnon !

Blaire White posted a YouTube video about trans women in women' sport mentioning McKinnon who then blocked Blaire. That really makes sense- McKinnon's supposedly campaigning for trans rights but can't cope with the idea that one of most well known trans women disagrees with McKinnon.

Twitter blocklists?
PotholeParadies · 06/12/2020 03:12

So he has. What a bloody prat.

Ally's been writing for the Guardian for years, and he used to comment so much on CommentIsFree that I assumed they paid him to moderate it.

Ally sticking together with Owen, here? Or is she the wrong kind of women's rights campaigner for him because she's supported the conservative party?

YouNoob · 06/12/2020 06:20

DidoLamenting. I'm doing GC all wrong I guess. Wink

YouNoob · 06/12/2020 06:28

Posted too soon.

I only post on individual blue tick accounts, organisation accounts and GC accounts. Maybe that keeps me under the radar? Although I have posted on LOJ, JM and the usual suspects. 🤷🏽‍♀️

RealityNotEssentialism · 06/12/2020 07:47

OP, I know you have changed your mind now but what made you sign up to a TERF-blocker in the first place? Were you also signed up to a Racism-blocker, sexism-blocker, ageism-blocker, anti-semitism blocker and ableism-blocker?

The reason I ask is that it seems the trans issue is the only one where people literally cannot tolerate to see any dissent from their own view. TERF-blocker doesn’t block actual transphobes (the types on KiwiFarms and the like). Instead it focuses on women and anyone following an account that is gender critical.

I’m just interested in why people can’t bear to see any disagreement about trans issues but will tolerate seeing other discrimination.

I don’t think that many GC accounts use a blocklist and if they do it’s to prevent abuse and doxxing. But if I see that someone has blocked me I will usually block back.

BraveBananaBadge · 06/12/2020 08:23

I wonder about this from time to time, I read you’re supposed to be able to see if you’re on a block list simply by looking at your lists page. But I’ve never seen any on mine, and am definitely blocked by people (Challinor, Boyle etc) who I have absolutely nothing to do with. I don’t tweet GC stuff either.

254 though, blimey!
