@fruitbat987

i'm wondering how mermaids can still continue to receive funding from organisations like the lottery, after this judgment?
Hopefully this will make organisations like the lottery think again.
yourhairiswinterfire · 01/12/2020 13:00
@yourhairiswinterfire do you have a link to that Lush tantrum? I’d love to see it.
There was a thread about WPUK releasing their financial statement here. Apparently now they've proven they're not funded by the American far right, they must be tax dodgers instead Grin

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4092218-WPUK-have-released-a-financial-statement-showing-money-received-by-source-and-how-it-is-spent?pg=9

These were a few of the tantrums on Twitter.

twitter.com/search?q=Lush&src=typed_query

Trans people have a right to know how people spend their own money, demanding to know if Lush in the US are also complicit in funding anti-trans campaigners, etc.

MammothMashup · 01/12/2020 13:00

I've just read elsewhere on a thread that PBS are given out in Australia with no therapy.

Is anyone doing any studies or follow ups on that?

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/12/2020 13:04

@MammothMashup

its exactly.

A QC has just accidentally explained how to circumnavigate the system and is tweeting against a court judgement and dismissing them and the nhs.

Legal types:

Can he not be sanctioned for this?

BettyFloop · 01/12/2020 13:04

Just watching the headlines and there's going to be a report on BBC 1 o'clock news with Keira's speech outside court.

Cwenthryth · 01/12/2020 13:04

@sultanasofa

I'm loving the language used in the summary - sex (not gender), no 'assigned at birth'

"Gender dysphoria is a condition where persons experience distress because of a mismatch between their perceived identity and their natal sex, that is, their sex at birth. Such persons have a strong desire to live according to their perceived identity rather than their natal sex. "

Still reading so don’t know if anyone has yet countered this - but there’s a step missing here. It’s not possible to have a “mismatch” between your sex and your identity any more than its possible to have a “mismatch” between your eye colour and your favourite ice cream flavour - the mismatch is between how you believe people of your sex (or eye colour) should be, and how you feel compared to that presumed stereotype (gender is of course a presumed sex-based stereotype).

Anyone know how I can send Keira and the team flowers?

1stDecember · 01/12/2020 13:06

Today is a FUCKING good day Grin

HPFA · 01/12/2020 13:06

@nauticant

I was thinking of Jolyon needing to steer his case away from the direction of puberty blockers HPFA. An intervention he seems to be rather enthusiastic about.

(But to be honest my main motivation for posting was to write shot Jolyon's fox.)

Oh yes, that is clearly the underlying purpose of his case.

I share the celebrations but I almost wish Keira's case about the affirmation approach had gone through instead. Because it seems to be that madness which is leading to most of the damage.

persistentwoman · 01/12/2020 13:08

@DorotheaDiamond

Anyone know how I can send Keira and the team flowers?
Go via the solicitor / barrister. It would be dangerous to put contact details on here

It’s going to be on BBC News at 1 very shortly.

Well done Keira. We are with you 💐

viques · 01/12/2020 13:11

@HecatesCats

Reading that full judgement is shocking. In very moderate terms it lays out how vulnerable children have been treated with experimental drugs, no research completed, no regard for associated mental illnesses, children set on a path of lifetime surgery and medication and asked to make decisions about their future fertility and sex lives that no child can ever comprehend.

It is absolutely chilling how this has been allowed to go on for so long with such little scrutiny.

I agree. The fact that clinics were prepared to give treatments which were essentially experimental but didn’t even record basic medical and psychological information about these children, or make any effort to keep follow up records is horrifying. I was almost amused to see how many times the word “surprised” appeared in the judgement in relation to evidence from clinics and clinicians. I think the word ‘surprised’ is the judicial equivalent of WTF!!!!! which is what most people would have recorded instead.

Also dreadful to read the way they glossed over the ramifications of initial and further treatments in terms of future physical, emotional and cognitive development. In addition the almost universal practise of offering no alternative to short term gain in exchange for probable long term pain is hardly the way medical ethics is supposed to work.

For those of us who remember the original Gillick case (so long ago now) it is fascinating to see how that landmark judgement has now encompassed so many areas. I hate to say it but thank you Victoria Gillick, little did you know when you set out on your spiteful little journey to deny young women body autonomy that you would end up saving so many young people.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 01/12/2020 13:12

So will there be a follow up by the police? Surely laws have been broken?

RedToothBrush · 01/12/2020 13:12

@MammothMashup

Is Jo suggesting you can buy PBS on the dark web? Shock
You can buy heroin off the dark web.

Doesn't mean you should be advocating or promoting it to minors though because it would still be illegal to supply these drugs to minors who can't consent and don't have credit cards of their own...

TofuDelights · 01/12/2020 13:13

This is amazing news - well done to Keira and all her team and fantastic supporters. BBC news on now, waiting to see her statement. Can we really be optimistic now?

Flowers for Keira, and everyone involved.

ArabellaScott · 01/12/2020 13:14

@FurryGiraffe

As a lawyer, I can't remember the last time I read a judgment in which the judges found so many things to be 'surprising', which is judge-speak for 'absolutely mindblowing'.

The judgment didn't tell me anything I didn't know about PBs, but seeing the complete absence of evidence for this 'treatment', laid out in black and white, really is quite something.

Grin IANAL, but I understand it to mean 'fucking hell'.
yourhairiswinterfire · 01/12/2020 13:16

@ThatIsNotMyUsername

So will there be a follow up by the police? Surely laws have been broken?
Or will it be one of those ''we investigated ourselves and found that we did nuffink wrong'' kind of things?
PeaPodThePocketSquirrel · 01/12/2020 13:16

Thank you Keira.

The judgement is worded "surprisingly" Smile so much on the side of common sense I am genuinely surprised and also may have shed a tear. How awful it is though, that children have had to go through all this before common sense starts to prevail.

As someone with DC the same age, it gives me so much reassurance and hope. I have a GC DD who is very cautious about speaking out as she knows students (and her university!) would round on her so much. Hopefully this judgement will help give younger women the "back up" and confidence to speak out without so much fear of reprisals.

I think it's a lot harder when you're a teenager or young person, to speak out against the prevailing "in trend" attitudes and having a judgement like this to quote, should work wonders. As I know it's so hard for that age to speak out, it increases my admiration for Keira who has shown amazing strength and bravery.

BettyDuKeiraBellisMyShero · 01/12/2020 13:19

Huffpost have updated their original article. Looks a lot more realistic now Wink

Thank you Keira. You're an amazing young woman.

I hope this is the end of affirmation. My niece was referred by CAMHS to the Tavistock and Mermaids. She was an adult when she started physical treatment.

littlbrowndog · 01/12/2020 13:21

Shocking

Keira
CaveMum · 01/12/2020 13:23

On BBC News at One now.

SisterWendyBuckett · 01/12/2020 13:25

This judgement is massive.

What an incredible and courageous young woman Keira is - let's remember that she's only 23.

Same age as my own daughter, who has now been on testosterone for 2.5 years and is waiting for a mastectomy.

Too late for her and many of our daughters.

However - truth, light and sanity has triumphed today and so many more of our girls, our young lesbians, our vulnerable youth, will now be protected from irreversible harm thanks to Keira's bravery.
