Chrome extension - to mark people out

SmallPug · 30/11/2020 13:54

I wanted to flag up this Google chrome extension thing. If you add it and google people, they'll come up in different colours if they're perceived to be anti-trans vs pro-trans (normal blue is neutral). So Owen Jones is green, Joanna Cherry is red. It's absolutely appalling and will only heighten tensions between people trying to discuss these issues. Eg,if you're concerned with the clash of rights re: women's spaces, you're automatically red. I'm pretty shocked and concerned about the potential consequences for individuals from something like this.

Yes, it's been around a while.

In terribly surprising news for TRAs, the name refers to anime/Japanese culture.

Fucking creeps. Unhinged, dangerous creeps.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/11/2020 14:01

I also would be wary of downloading it.

SmallPug · 30/11/2020 14:13

Thanks. I added it to see who's on there. It's quite insane - people marked in red who you would never class as 'transphobic', including trans people!

fastwigglylines · 30/11/2020 15:05

DON'T DOWNLOAD IT!

It's spyware and probably scraping your data.

And given the way it operates is illegal anyway, you have no way of knowing what else the developers are using it for.

I don't have time to do this, but I'm instantly suspicious of the OP, who seems to be encouraging people to download it.

OP, if you're not a TRA, have a think about what you're saying - you're basically doing the TRA's work for them.

Fine to discuss it, but with a massive caveat to NOT DOWNLOAD IT as it's dodgy as fuck!

fastwigglylines · 30/11/2020 15:05

Sorry, I meant I don't have time to advance search.

fastwigglylines · 30/11/2020 15:06

If anyone's in the UK / EU, please consider reporting this extension as it breaks our data protection rules by keeping and sharing data about us without our permission.

RadandMad · 30/11/2020 16:50

Imagine being so effing fragile you need an internet extension to rate people for you.

Grin

More to the point, imagine being so fucking thick you can't work out for yourself whether randoms on the internet share your views without someone helpfully colour coding them for you.

SunsetBeetch · 30/11/2020 18:05

It's so they don't have to see the terrible opinions in the first place. Because words are literal violence

SmallPug · 30/11/2020 18:38

Sorry!! I am definitely not a TRA but I’m seriously concerned about having downloaded it now. What should I do?

OP posts:
SmallPug · 30/11/2020 18:40

I’ve taken it off chrome. But I’m worried about what it might have done.

Who do you report to?

Have you got security software that can scan your system?

Avg used to be free

ILikePlayingGuitar · 30/11/2020 18:50

I'm curious as to why some people here are saying we should report this extension... I thought we were pro free speech?

This attitude seems a little bit hypocritical to me, to be honest!

SmallPug · 30/11/2020 18:50

I’m on a Mac. I always assume that’s all I need as I’ve never had security issues

OP posts:
yourhairiswinterfire · 30/11/2020 18:52

Yes, full computer scan. If you don't have any anti virus installed, Avast is free and quite good. Superantispyware and Malwarebytes also have free versions, I believe (Malwarebytes got rid of a nasty ransomware virus I had)

Just to be on the safe side.

SmallPug · 30/11/2020 18:59

Thank you

This is possibly the most stupid internet related thing I’ve ever done. Not sure why I didn’t have more sense!

It's got nothing to do with free speech. This app collects your personal details without your permission, keeps them on a database and make information about you available to others.

There is no way to remove yourself from the database.

All of the above is illegal in the EU / under the data protection act / GDPR.

fastwigglylines · 30/11/2020 19:04

You can report it to the Information Commissioner in the UK.

Putting people on a 'bad list' for think women are humans with their own needs is making them vulnerable to targeted harassment from some frankly dangerous, unhinged menaces.

It's creepy as fuck.
