Summary - 15 year old girl wants to be a boy. Parents don’t want her to receive hormone therapy. Court removes child from parents. Court case this week regarding starting hormone therapy.

I’ll be watching the court case closely. Australia is very pro transgender rights. This is terrifying.

Medication and surgery is the very last resort for life saving/changing instances. There is no ‘safe’ medical treatment.

In all eventualities? So let a suicidal child kill themselves? So at what age did you allow your child to do everything that wanted? A parents job is to support and guide. Not refuse to listen and ignore things that are important to them.

Medication and surgery is the very last resort for life saving/changing instances. There is no ‘safe’ medical treatment. Those things are a LONG way down the list of treatment. First, psychologist/counselling. NO ONE ever just lobs a teenager onto hormones. And surgery will be years away, if ever.

Bodily autonomy, Joswis? When the child is legally still too young to have a tattoo or even have her ears pierced without her parents' consent?

And the state removes the child rather than agree with the parents that some counselling might be helpful?

I don't buy it. Australia has a disastrous reputation for protecting children of all and every variety from its very inception. It was my childhood/young adulthood home and it's sad to see things still haven't reliably improved.

Keira Bell was given puberty blockers after three counselling sessions. Does that sound adequate to you?

First time I've been called a Karen!

When you have to resort to name calling you've lost the argument.

NotBadConsidering · 01/12/2020 10:53

I know for a fact, first hand, that children in Australia are put on puberty blockers without any therapy.

Indeed. Its useful when people do the Karen insult. They are simply holding a sign up to show everyone their poor level of critical thought. It's very kind of them to do that because we can then choose to ignore them.

What is more autonomous than making a new life? A new human?

OldCrone · 01/12/2020 11:05

Keira Bell has won. This may have implications for what's happening elsewhere in the world.

The judge ruled that children are unlikely to be able to give informed consent to puberty blockers because of the long term consequences and experimental nature of the treatment.

Sanity prevails! Thank goodness.

I had one ovary removed a month ago - I had huge cysts on both ovaries and the original plan was to remove the one with the biggest cyst - cyst, ovary, fallopian tube, the lot.

When they actually got in there they realised that the ovary with the smaller cyst was the biggest problem - it had a large endometriotic cyst on it which had ruptured, so they look that ovary out instead. Fortunately the surgeon was able to save the other ovary, otherwise I would have lost both and had to go onto HRT....even though I am 43, he still did not want me to lose both ovaries as they are so essential for a woman's health.

Women who are forced into premature menopause have vastly increased risks of osteoporosis, heart disease and worst of all, dementia. What are the long term risks to people with female chromosomes being exposed to artificially high levels of male hormones, especially from such a young age? Does anybody actually know, or is there anyone out there with a scientific background who can hazard a guess?

Even as a layperson, this idea seems most unwise, to say the least.
