Angry

Fuxake.

‘We decided to have girls on the desk, hostesses’ and then they talk about the make up, dress etc, ‘glamorous but not tarty’ and make them do a twirl for the manager to check them.

It’s a place I have hosted work related lunches.

I can do without this shit.

It's never been on my menu. It's not somewhere I would have gone to in London- if I wanted that sort of branded dining I'd have picked The Wolseley or Fortnum & Mason. And in Edinburgh I sort of resent these "big name" interlopers.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 28/11/2020 21:04

I have always liked their food.
Since before they became a chain.

I am probably being grumpy.

And plenty of other places to try.

Any chance of explaining what they have done?

This
What have they done, not clear?

  1. Never go there anyway as I'm not posh or rich enough lol
  2. ‘glamorous but not tarty’ and make them do a twirl for the manager to check them does sounds pretty grim, would be thinking fuck that

is the Ivy in Edinburgh part of Ivy london? I have to say the building they chose to site themselves in is what's put it on the naughty list for me. That NEVER should have got planning permission.

I don't know if it's "part of" or just a franchise. There's a whole row of similar restaurants there , none of which I've been to except Hawksmoor , which was a business do and I wasn't paying. I'm a bit tempted by Dishoom and Wahaca but even there it's not as if Edinburgh is short on Mexican or Indian restaurants.

Duckwit · 28/11/2020 21:45

Anyone got a link?!

Anyone got a link?!
This
Quaagars · 28/11/2020 21:50

I'm joining the can we have a link brigade Smile
Or we can just all agree for pages that asking for a twirl and having to put make up and swirly dresses is Angry and complain and agree it's shit but have no clue what it's in relation to Confused

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 28/11/2020 22:04

Sorry!
It was a documentary tonight on London Live , following the re-opening following a refurb. After lots of hard- working chef angst, all of a sudden they were appraising women, and their make up, as glamorous hostesses. and making them ‘do a twirl’ to see how they look, commenting on the quality of smile.

I felt disappointed.

my foodie friends say Edinburgh Wahaca is rubbish because they can't get the ingredients fresh enough... I shall bow out of any expensive invites to the Ivy if they are sexist peegs though... I'm going to Howies this week on Waterloo Place I can report back ...
EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/11/2020 23:49

I love The Ivy where I am ( Cambridge) so.its disappointing to hear that.

stumbledin · 28/11/2020 23:55

Was / is it this one? www.radiotimes.com/tv-programme/e/d497vs/episode-1-the-ivy/

Dont think I have ever watched anything on London Live.

Defaultname · 29/11/2020 00:05

Actually surprised that they were talking about women, rather than a drag act.

Iamhangingin · 29/11/2020 08:36

Edinburgh Wahaca is lovely - they let you reserve large tables without a deposit so we've used it for get togethers for a womens group I'm part of (and they are very accommodating about us sitting around for ages!)

The whole concept of a hostess rather than it being a gender neutral role seems like a 1960's throw back!

Yes, it's almost like they know which group of people to utilise for men's leering opportunities, isn't it?
nosswith · 29/11/2020 11:17

Glad I've never been there.

BlackForestCake · 29/11/2020 16:47

It's not exactly Hooters, is it?

SlopesOff · 29/11/2020 17:35

The London Ivy (in the old days) seemed to be biased towards 'gentlemen'. It was dull and gloomy and had brown panelled walls like a 'gentleman's club' and the staff treated it as if it was one too. Women were not particularly welcome, and mainly ignored or looked down on.

I hated it, and never had any desire to go to there in the first place, only went if I had to, never mid in recent years.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 29/11/2020 17:57

@BlackForestCake

It's not exactly Hooters, is it?
LOL. No. I think that’s why I was so taken aback.

Refurb, but same old sexism.

Tbf some of the waiters looked well fit.

Gurufloof · 29/11/2020 18:59

Its not a place I go to often but cant really say it's expensive for the food. I dunno about drinks as I rarely drink out of the home. But they have a set menu for about 25 quid, a main at about 12 quid and the steaks which is how I judge a eatery are about £18 to £40. I've paid more in worse places.

Obviously wont be going again.

RedtreesRedtrees · 29/11/2020 19:27

“It's not exactly Hooters, is it?”

Honestly, you lot Grin

PoulePouletteEternellement · 29/11/2020 19:46

Curious ... Pretty sure the last time I went to the Manchester branch the male and female hosts/hostesses were equally primped and prettified. And neither sex were particularly glamorous at breakfast time in Oxford a few months ago.

I'm more disappointed to hear that Edinburgh now has exactly the same restaurant branches as everywhere else.
