Sarah Parker Remond was a free black American from Massachusetts who came to Britain in 1859 to speak against slavery, and stayed until 1866. She then went to Italy where she became doctor. A remarkable woman who deserves (as many women do) to much better known. I have a copy of an autobiographical essay she wrote for the Englishwoman's Journal in June 1861 which I would be delighted to send to anyone interested in her.
