Just did a very good piece on proposed legislation to criminalise catcalling, whistling and general sexual harrassment of women and girls. LBC. I missed the beginning of it. When I get a minute I will try and find out a bit more. I think it is a couple of campaigns atm.

Just listened to it (was quite put off J O'B for a while).

How lovely are the two young women starting this petition in conjunction with Plan International (and another charity I forget the name of).

They are being helped along by Dexter Diaz QC who is very angry at what his daughters are subject to "every other day".

endofthelinefinally · 24/11/2020 13:35

Yes. I am not usually a fan of J O'B, but he was very supportive of this.
I only put the radio on for background while cooking.

I fucking hate those cowardly bullies who shout from moving vehicles at women and girls.

I bet that most of them wouldn't make eye contact with a woman in the same room..

Wankers. (I feel very strong about this.)

Petition and campaign website links are in here.

This must be the same thing as in this article in this morning's Times newspaper:
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/2cbceeba-2dbc-11eb-8bd6-64d3c9126a9b?shareToken=9db9a273d5e3fd7d3be43b453d3671d4

And they wonder why we want to maintain our own spaces away from men.

PurpleHoodie · 24/11/2020 13:50

Thanks Errol

How does JOB handle his cognitive dissonance? I'd really love to know.

Here is a related thread:

I do wonder that Sunset. I really do.

Totally support change in legislation can’t believe this is still going on! I was hassled as a teen and now my own teens are 🙄. Men have had long enough to fix this and have proved they can’t and doing nothing not an option the law needs to get tougher on abusive perverts.

Quillink · 24/11/2020 14:17

I completely agree. Street harassment blighted my life as a girl and young woman. It was so intimidating. A good thing about getting older is being free to walk the streets unharrassed. I'm livid that young women and girls don't have that freedom yet.

endofthelinefinally · 24/11/2020 14:30

The first time my daughter was groped on public transport I was angry, but also profoundly sad that this is still going on.
My sister was assaulted on a school trip and her teacher told her to stop making a fuss and ignore the man.
We need to really make a noise about this.

Ugh.. I recall being plagued by filthy perverts as a 14/15 year old who thought it ok to harass a teenager on her way to school.

I remember my mother asking me why I didn't wear more 'feminine' clothes. Mainly it's because I was a punky indie kid of the early 90's and stomped about in doc martens and baggy dresses/ leggings, but also because the minute I ventured into anything more shapely, the harassment began.

My mum was very old school and thought being cat called and harassed by pigs was somehow flattering and 'just the way men are' 🙄

carlaCox · 24/11/2020 14:56

I'll give it a listen. I remember being about 19 and walking down Carnaby Street with my mum and she was absolutely horrified by the number of sexual comments and gestures men were making at me. I hadn't even noticed. I guess I was so used to it that I'd learnt to block it out of my vision.

I'd hoped with phone cameras everywhere we'd have a way to deter men from doing this but the problem is that you have no idea which of these men is going to be the violent nutter who turns around and attacks you for trying to film them.

twoglassesofprosecco · 24/11/2020 19:14

I'll have a listen.

Emma Barnett covered this yesterday on 5Live.

She had a caller call late so played it on today's show.

A man who catcalls women and girls and he tried to justify his actions.
All the usual justifications: He prefers 6th formers so they're not young (still children though, you pig), all men do it in the real world, they're asking for it with their short skirts (uniforms), and many love it and smile and he's had dates from it. Oh, and he actually said women are objects. But when Emma asked if he thought of his mother that way, he doesn't, of course.

My skin is still crawling.

OhHolyJesus · 24/11/2020 19:44

J o'B has twin daughters I think around Pre-teen age?

But he also was flirting with Paris Lees and thinks Paris is a woman.

He told off Posie P for her view on single sex spaces.

For all his bluster on air I wonder how he sleeps at night as he clearly doesn't really believe what he says, so I suppose it's just a performance for 'click bait' style radio.

endofthelinefinally · 24/11/2020 19:53

Maybe he will wake up a bit when his daughters get a bit older.

Maybe he will wake up a bit when his daughters get a bit older.

I doubt it. If he’s not in the thick of it with girls of 13, he will find reasons after. His stance doesn’t seem thought through.

It’s a crucial time for girls, 10-13/14. At 16 they simply become legal, which makes everything okay, apparently.

Ikeasucks · 24/11/2020 21:20

He has said on air that he doesn’t see someone with a penis as a woman
