I saw this on Maya's twitter. Does anyone know where this happened? I beyond shocked. I knew it was bad in schools but the extent of capture is off the scale.

If you click through on that YouTube channel you can see the video.

I don't know why it pinged into my timeline today, it seems its last year.

I remember that. Somewhat inconveniently the teacher (who was adamant that there were more than two "genders") never got around to saying exactly how many there are!

Rubbish teacher, eh?

Here is an article about it.

Thanks for these. When I was at school, education was about discussion and ideas were debated. Schools and universities are becoming indoctrination centres.

This was last year wasn't it? If I remember correctly from threads at the time the boy in question was expelled for secretly filming the teacher during the argument and then putting it on social media, rather than for what he actually said? Either way it did a tremendous job of alerting more people to the issue. I actually had a complete stranger that I'd been chatting to in a coffee shop go on a rant about how ridiculous it was. Even better, after she said that it was different if people had "actually changed sex" or if they were "hermaphrodites" I was able to explain to her what the basis for sex classification actually is, why it can't be changed, why "hermaphrodites" aren't a real thing in humans, and what DSD conditions actually are. So thanks to this lad there is at least one more person in the world with a slightly better understanding of the science behind the issues. Little by little and all that.

I think there are an indeterminate number of genders/gender identities, but only 2 sexes.
This is where this ridiculous conflation of "sex" and "gender" has got us.
In this instance, I think the teacher and student were both referring to sex.

Actually, I don't think this, personally, I am trying to explain what I think we are supposed to believe. I wish we could get rid of the word "gender", except when learning french nouns.

OhHolyJesus · 15/11/2020 18:21

I could be wrong but I think Murray lost a year of his education because of this. I do hope that not true and someone can confirm either way.

I now hate the stupid word.

To me it describes misery.

To me it's just become too contentious a word to be particularly useful.

I think we should go back to the 'learning foreign languages' meaning too. It's a useful starting point for learning to separate out the biological from the sociocultural, because it gives you these words 'masculine, feminine, neuter' which are associated with a sex but aren't actual sexes themselves.

I remember the outcry about this one too. It seemed to fall into three camps: genderists who think the word refers to a class of identities, of which clearly there are about seven billion unique ones; people on the metaphorical Clapham omnibus who've translated gender as a euphemism for sex and so know there are only two; and those who were appalled on the grounds of indoctrination and free speech issues, because you can't kick a kid out of school for disagreeing with a teacher about science.

That one word is doing far too much work.
