Carrie Symonds is running the country

Interesting blogpost from Mary Beard here about the current situation in Downing Street being put down to Carrie Symonds putting her foot down and getting rid of Boris’ advisers (or that he sacked them because they were mean about her).

If true then good.

laudemio · 14/11/2020 20:36

Noblegiraffe this is the same man that thought his Rose Garden briefing would quash the Barnard Castle shenanigans. You are giving him far too much credit, he is not infallible. Also, in addition to the Gove plot, Brexit is toast (effectively) now Biden is in. DC doesn't want to look like he failed at getting Brexit done on his terms, so he wants the world to know he was gone before the deal is done.

Lots of the right/white/male on twiitter piling on and complaining about Princess nut nuts being ‘unelected’ and forcing our Dom and completely failing to see the hypocrisy in that.

TicTacTwo · 14/11/2020 20:38

What do people think about the rumour that DC calling her "Princess Nut Nuts" was his downfall 😂 I expected something a bit more explosive than that

laudemio · 14/11/2020 20:44

I do think she looks like a very cute squirrel, so I did wonder about the origin of the nickname.

SentientAndCognisant · 14/11/2020 20:44

The moniker princess nut nuts really made me laugh
She is out doors horsey and comes across as a princess

Saucery · 14/11/2020 20:46

I think it was probably the latest in a long line of drip, drip scorn from that quarter. She’s bitten back. Good for her.
PerkingFaintly · 14/11/2020 20:50

WTF? So basically some people complaining that the unelected and unaccountable power behind the throne (Symonds) has got rid of the unelected and unaccountable power behind the throne (Cain and Cummings)?

If Cain or Cummings had any expertise other than how to manipulate people and break things, and Symonds was a Nancy Reagan-type astrology fan, then there might be a smidgeon of a reasonable complaint here.

As it is, she seems at least as qualified and experienced as the two men, and is even in a similarly easily terminated position. (Johnson very obviously doesn't considers himself in any way beholden to the women he shags, so it's not like she's blackmailing him with "preserving a marriage" against the good of the nation).

Symonds is basically another unelected No 10 functionary. If she won a battle over some other No 10 functionaries, so be it.

The really worrying thing here is that so many people speak as though Johnson is not the power, given he was the one elected...

PerkingFaintly · 14/11/2020 20:52

I'm sure Prof Beard is right, though, that Symonds is being used as a highly convenient scapegoat.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 14/11/2020 20:56

Why would anyone working for the PM think it's a good idea to be bitchy about his partner? No PM would tolerate such blatant disrespect. If a person is going to piss off anyone, it's unlikely to be the person he's about to marry

Bluntness100 · 14/11/2020 20:56

Eh, you understand this isn’t a dictatorship, it’s a democracy, and we have a government right? Even Boris isn’t running the country as a one man band. That’s not how it works.

And if he can’t run it as a one man band, I think you’ll find his partner can’t either.

Fouroclockonamarblemorning · 14/11/2020 21:05

@JacobReesMogadishu

If she got rid of Cummings she’s doing an ok job.
I agree! He should have been booted after Barnardcastlegate. Lying bastard.
FlouncerInDenial · 14/11/2020 21:13

@noblegiraffe

Cummings' exit from Downing Street was stage managed down to the little box of possessions. Deliberately done for attention, which is not the actions of an arrogant man who has just been bested by a woman.

I would suspect that Carrie being behind it is being used as a narrative to hide something else.

I agree with this. And I think she's being scapegoated.

But I'm also sure boris will have moved on at least once by the next election. I hope she's got a decent back up plan

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2020 21:27

He should have been booted after Barnardcastlegate. Lying bastard.

Exactly. And he wasn’t. So he has some serious heft with Boris. We’re suddenly supposed to believe his girlfriend has more?

Boris has a long history of treating women badly.

Everything needs a populist angle these days. Electorate too thick to see nuance. What says Your voice is meaningless more than Cummings’ staying in his role after his road trip?
But what’s this......? A feisty vegan former communications officer who has won the heart of the wayward, tousle-haired Cookie Monster PM?
She’s kicking out Gollum and someone we’ve never even heard of before?
Hurrah!

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2020 21:39

I’m wondering whether they’ll announce a wedding to distract from Brexit.

Yes, it happens a lot. Whenever adult men get into a relationship they automatically become puppets in thrall to the manipulative woman, with no agency of their own any more.

To whom? Miss Symonds or the violinist?
TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 14/11/2020 21:49

But isn’t she behind the new incoming ban on all junk food advertising

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2020 21:50

Why Shhh don’t mention the violinist, it ruins the image of Boris defending Carrie’s honour.

Saucery · 14/11/2020 21:58

Carrie isn’t there as Boris’s significant other, lol. That isn’t where she is aiming for at all.

BalloonSlayer · 14/11/2020 22:03

Hasn't he supposedly been unfaithful with some violin player recently?

I wouldn't imagine someone being able to have super-influence on someone who didn't respect them enough to be faithful to them.

But yeah, it's always blame the woman . . .

Member · 14/11/2020 22:04

It’s the old “Yoko Ono broke up The Beatles” thing as though John Lennon had little agency on calling time on the circle jerking etc

Splodgetastic · 14/11/2020 22:09

@CountFosco Oh God, I do hope not.
