As the title says, new American congresswoman from Georgia is “100% pro-life” as well as pro-gun and pro-Trump. However, when tweeting about her decision to not wear a face mask at New Member Orientation, it’s “My body, my choice”.

I can’t face palm hard enough.

Does she really not know that masks are worn to protect other people, not just yourself?

meditrina · 14/11/2020 08:15

I really didn't think anyone's thinking could be that muddled!

(Unless of course she really thinks that 'nature should take is course' whatever happens, and will oppose all forms of surgery and all forms of public health measures)

SophocIestheFox · 14/11/2020 08:19

That is some impressively muddled thinking.

I’m always baffled by anti-choicers trying to restrict access to contraception, too, as it seems obvious to me that better contraception is the best way to prevent abortions... but no, that’s not how it seems to go.

I read that as plain ignorance

Possibly wilful ignorance

How can someone still not know that masks protect other people?

(I wonder what her views are on vaccinations, but I don't think I can stomach a can of worms before I've finished my morning coffee)

Canwecancel2020 · 14/11/2020 08:26

It’s all in the word ‘my’. This is a person who obviously values her right to do what she wants with her own body and values the rights of only those she judges worthy.

A lack of ability to see or understand the situation of others who may not hold her views or are living/going through something that she has been fortunate enough never to experience - whether that’s a struggling pregnant woman or a person vulnerable to Covid that she coughs all over. A great choice for government Hmm (probably an anti vaxxer too)

Poor Georgia

Canwecancel2020 · 14/11/2020 08:27

Is she Phyllis schlafley Mark 2?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 14/11/2020 08:36

I understand she is a believer in the QAnon conspiracy theory, so she believes in a whole lot more rubbish than just mask wearing should be a choice.

Absolutely! It’s just so ridiculously hypocritical to use pro-life type slogans such as “my body, my choice” regarding something as arbitrary as mask wearing (arbitrary as in how easy it is to actually do) but not apply the same to abortion, and in fact be actively, staunchly against it.

America seems like quite a strange country to me, and I'm sure havig a conspiray theorist as President for the last 4 years hasn't helped. Politicising mask wearing was a terrible mistake but I see a lot of people over here feel the same way.

I would have more empathy with Pro Lifers if they were also pro safe, easily available contraception and pro safe, easily available maternity care and pro supportive and regulated adoptive services, but for the overwhelming majority its about control over a woman's body so I don't.

The fundamental problem with having a functional democracy in the US is the way they find education by district taxes. The poorer the neighbourhood, the less is available to spend on schools and the harder it is for people to move to secure better for their children. The whole state and the whole country do not step in to level up education spending.

If investing in high quality education for all your children is not a priority for a nation, nothing else is going to go right, is it?

You only have to listen to some of the guff people say to know that they are woefully undereducated, leaving them vulnerable to conspiracy theories.

Aesopfable · 14/11/2020 15:57

You are missing the point of pro-life. It is not about whether or not you decide what to do with your body. Pro-lifers believe that life starts at conception. A six week old foetus is as much a living human as you or I and have as much right to life as us. To abort is to murder. Therefore there can be no choice any more than there should be a choice after birth. Masks are much more disputable - there is little evidence either way that masks as worn by the general public prevent spread of covid. Therefore they insist on the choice. I guess not wearing them because they don't see them as preventing deaths. I think being prolife and pro death penalty or pro guns is more hypocritical if you are taking such a position on the sanctity of all life.
