Skin is appearing at the Hay Festival. Apparently she's an LGBTQ+ activist. First I've heard of it. I'm a lesbian and I keep an eye out for lesbians in the media and entertainment world and I failed to spot her. The blurb from the festival says she's been championing LGBTQ+ issues during her 25-year career. Who knew?

Janaih · 07/11/2020 19:49

I dont think shes ever made a secret of it.

Janaih · 07/11/2020 19:50

I'm imagining OP has a spreadsheet of lesbians in the media Grin

Gncq · 07/11/2020 19:51

Ooh I saw them live in Brixton around 1998, she was great...

Whatsnewpussyhat · 07/11/2020 19:52

I know the book cover will have been touched up, but she looks exactly the same as she did 25 years ago!

righttothepoint · 07/11/2020 19:54

do you follow her? she's made it quite clear and speaks freely on the subject

maddiemookins16mum · 07/11/2020 20:16

I always thought they were called Skunk and Nancy.

*misses point of thread.

Whererainfalls · 07/11/2020 20:22

She's been vocal about being lesbian from the very start.

LockdownLump · 07/11/2020 20:30

She's always been out.

I'm imagining OP has a spreadsheet of lesbians in the media

🤣🤣

OhHolyJesus · 07/11/2020 20:33

I think the OP is pointing out how the BGT have been added to what Skin championed, or at least the G and the T.

You could champion lesbian rights only or awareness of lesbian issues only but you would still be labelled as being a champion for LGBT as you can no longer have the one without the other 3.

At least I read this as the point of the OP. I still love Skunk Anansie and always knew Skin was a lesbian, not that it meant much to me at the time, I just liked their music, very angry, it suited me as much then as it does now.

TrainspottingWelsh · 07/11/2020 20:34

I was a fan in the 90's, and it was fairly common knowledge even then. At school I remember being smugly 'informed' she was a lesbian around the time twisted hit the charts. As with much of the music I was in to, these particular girls only recognised it when a song became mainstream, they were more into boyzone and similar shite, so I presume their info came from some crappy magazine. It wasn't news to me, and as I didn't read teen or music mags I believe it was just a known fact amongst fans.

NiceGerbil · 07/11/2020 20:36

Skin has as far as I know always been out

Also beautiful and confident and generally awesome I think?

I don't know much about her but was alternative person in the 90s so obviously was familiar with their music and her as front woman.

What's the problem with her op?

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/11/2020 20:38

But if she wasn't gay ....she can still support gay people, right ? Sorry I'm so behind on the correct terminology , I'm a dinosaur!

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 07/11/2020 20:38

They were my first ever live concert and we met Cass the drummer when queuing for the toilet.
She rocked back then and still does!

*totally misses point of thread Grin

AgathaTabathaBagatha · 07/11/2020 20:38

I knew. I love her. Saw her play at a festival in the 90s, she was brilliant.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 07/11/2020 20:39

She's beautiful, Hedonism is possibly the most gorgeous song ever and her voice on it is incredible. The nostalgia is I feel for that time when I hear it is almost painful.

Op so she's been an out lesbian for decades.

Does that help with your question?

AgathaTabathaBagatha · 07/11/2020 20:42

Not sure what is the point of this thread....

InFlagranteDerelicto · 07/11/2020 20:45

I always thought she was fantastic, much more my type of music than Boyzone or Take That, that my friends were into.

ArabellaScott · 07/11/2020 20:48

She is majestically awesome. I walked past her on the street once and it was quite a jaw dropping moment.

HalfBrick · 07/11/2020 20:51

I think she was the first out lesbian I remember growing up (Navratilova et al weren't really shouting it from the rooftops though obvs we knew). Those lyrics about 'smelly fingers from the sex we had on Xmas day'? Had a male friend who thought that was outrageous Grin She still has that cute high pitched speaking voice #icon.

Jbck · 07/11/2020 20:57

Me, I knew.

eddiemairswife · 07/11/2020 21:04

She apparently went to my old school.

jj1968 · 07/11/2020 21:04

She has vocally supported trans people

I feel very strongly that liberal people and left-wing people are very good at tearing each other apart. Trans people are not the enemy to feminists. The enemy to feminists are right-wing conservatives who want all of us fucking dead, and I think we can put so much energy into excluding each other and tearing each other apart that we make ourselves as a whole, much much weaker! Right-wing people use that weakness to make themselves stronger.
