Celebrating Labour Women

Got an email from West Midlands Labour about their new Labour Heroes mugs - the heroes turn out to be three women - Margaret Bondfield, Barbara Castle, Mo Mowlam - plus Nye Bevan and Clement Attlee. A small thing but a positive move in my eyes. www.labourheroes.com

… Positive not just because the women chosen outnumber the men but because:

  • they were women as most people understand the word (which had been becoming unusual from Labour)
  • and all of them, women and men, worked hard to make real practical improvements to the lives of ordinary people - which is what Labour politicians are meant to do.

Mo Mowlam - Good Friday Agreement
Barbara Castle - Equal Pay, speed limits, breathalysers, seatbelts
Margaret Bondfield - women’s suffrage, TUC
Nye Bevan - Welfare State
Clement Attlee - NHS, National Insurance

I'm hoping Keir Starmer can take the party back in that direction and at some point will tackle the disregard of women's rights that’s been allowed to grow in it.
