Meeting my MP about the Proud Trust sex ed materials

Mollscroll · 29/10/2020 18:12

I wrote to my Conservative female MP about the Proud Trust sex ed materials in May. I told her of my objections to the fact that they:

  • promoted male-focussed sexual activities to girls as young as 13
  • made no mention of any safe sex requirements around, for example, inserting objects in an anus
  • made no reference to breasts, clitoris
  • were designed to help girls discard their natural boundaries

And that all this was funded by the tampon tax which is supposed to be used in support of women and girls.

She did not get back to me despite multiple chasing letters. I suspect someone in her office did not like my objections. I have finally secured a meeting with her on zoom next week - I had to write to the local chair of the Conservative Party in order to get this.

Now that I have this meeting, I can't think what to say. I am so angry about the Proud Trust and about the betrayal of women and girls that I don't know what else to add.

I also don't know the current status of this material - I believe it may have been withdrawn but obviously the money, taken from the pockets of women and girls, has already been spent on a product which reduces us to mere tools for men's sexual pleasure.

Can anyone calmer and more succinct than me give me some pointers? What would you raise at this point?

"It took my going to the Chair of the local party to get this meeting which then happened within a week"

This is really worrying. Whatever your political viewpoint, meddling with the emails and letters of the MP you work for, cannot be justified. Could it even be an offence?

Galvantula · 02/11/2020 20:27

Well done Moll 😃

You have been busy! It really does make a difference when someone is willing to listen... Also when they are allowed to get the message. Angry

Hopefully whoever has been filtering your messages will not find it so easy now.

ChattyLion · 03/11/2020 04:09

Moll Flowers this is brilliant. Thanks for your energy on this. Excellent result. That’s a good tip to try party Chair if MP’s office are consistently not responsive. Thanks.

FindTheTruth · 03/11/2020 06:02

you crammed a lot into that meeting!

agree with bear that it's worrying your MP didn't get your emails ... seems to be a growing trend... theres another thread on here about Rosie Duffield MP, which mentions assistants keeping emails from her.

gardenbird48 · 03/11/2020 10:45

I think the young man in the room, or someone in her office, was quietly putting my communications aside.

this is extremely worrying, and something that has niggled me for a while. Is it possible to address this directly with your MP as if this is taking place on a wider scale it has huge implications for democracy.

As I understand, many MPs are supported by keen young things, often on a voluntary basis and if those keen young things have a focus on ensuring that a particular issue never reaches the eyes of the MP, that is a major problem.

Brilliant job in speaking to her though and getting her to start realising the scale of the issue. I think this is the major part of the problem in getting people to act, they can't grasp the depth of this and assume that 'it can't be that bad' or 'they won't let that happen' without realising that 'they' already are (police, courts, government, mps etc etc).

FindTheTruth · 03/11/2020 10:52

@gardenbird48 @beargrass do you think it's FOI-able? an FOI asking about MP assistants blocking constituents emails to MPs?

Aesopfable · 03/11/2020 14:14

I am not sure MPs are FOI-able for their correspondence: much of it would be confidential as supporting consitituents locally. Their status may also exempt them. Also if it was recorded how much was beong withheld then the MPs would also know.

JellyFishSquish · 03/11/2020 18:03

I think the young man in the room, or someone in her office, was quietly putting my communications aside.

If this happened it is a criminal offense. Undermining the workings of an elected MP by manipulating which constituents get their ear. If it could be proved. I wonder what else the government does is manipulated in this way.

What are you talking about. I've just looked at there stuff and not sure what you're objecting to.

Maybe have another look? A quick glance shows the Genderbread man, safeguarding issues (telling children they have the right to use the school single sex facilities of their choice), seeming to condone self medication if hormones. I don’t think they’ve read the Dept of Educations instruction on how to approach this with children. I’m sure if you take another look there will be all sorts.
Perfect28 · 03/11/2020 19:08

I've just had another look and can't find what the op is referring to? Do you have a link. I don't see how the toilet issue is a safeguarding one. Besides, many schools nowadays have gender neutral/ open toilets to try and counter bullying. That's probably the biggest safeguarding concern and I dread to think how a trans person could be bullied in a closed toilet of the sex they don't identify as.

What about how girls could be bullied in a mixed sex toilet? (Women and girls are 18 times more likely to be assaulted in mixed sex changing rooms) Or maintain their privacy and dignity? Or don’t you think girls are worth worrying about?

Do you think a transboy would be safer in the communal showers in the boys changing room?

Mollscroll · 03/11/2020 20:17

perfect it was the dice game. How to combine eg, anus and object or penis and penis in sexual activity. For teens age 13+. And funded by the Tampon Tax which is supposed to be for the benefit of women and girls. No mention of boundaries or safety. Or breasts or clitoris funnily enough. Just different ways to please a penis owner.

I actually think the original material may have been taken down. But the pack went out. And they got £99,960 of taxpayers’ money (more precisely of women’s money) to provide this horrible, potentially illegal stuff for schools.

Well done Mollscroll Thanks

Perfect28 · 03/11/2020 21:08

Anyone actually seen these dice because all I can find is the same image online (daily mail, the sun) Hmm doesn't actually say anywhere that the female anatomy is ignored? They are all about lgbtq+ and there's quite a bit about lesbianism on their website so are we sure that people aren't getting wound up over an assumption here? In terms of toilets and changing rooms, assault is assault. I want all children/people to be safe, not just girls. Perhaps the only suitable option would be for individual lockable areas but this is completely unrealistic. Also, nobody showers at school...

Blindingly0bvious · 03/11/2020 21:57

I showered at school. Is this not done anymore? What?

Blindingly schools still have showers and before COVID pupils were supposed to use them. Teen DD seems too embarrassed to strip and comes home from school stinking of body spray to shower here...

Perfect28 · 04/11/2020 07:00

Thank you. The dice have 6 sides (obviously), one is vulva-( to the person that said it omitted clitoris I actually think this is a much better word than vagina to reflect the more pleasurable parts), one is penis. The other 4 are not sex specific... Anus, object, hand and mouth. I genuinely don't see the problem here. The person who said 'ways to please a penis haver' clearly ommited the fact that there's vulva. You could roll several times and not land on penis at all..

I get the impression that some on here are simply against the idea of talking to young people about sex at all, besides the old 'when a man and a woman love eachother very much.'

Mollscroll · 04/11/2020 07:23

The material covers rimming, docking and inserting objects in the anus - for 13 year olds. But doesn’t mention breasts. Or pregnancy. Or consent. Or boundaries. And you think that’s ok?

OP posts:
FindTheTruth · 04/11/2020 07:47

Proud Trust supporters / staff won't see the problem. They're part of the problem.
