Hi.

I have x2 children that are both girls aged 10 and 5. I am a nurse by background. My eldest told my youngest the other day that only men can be doctors and females are nurses.

I was so confused as she has met female doctors. It then turned into a long sentence of men and women are equal and there is no jobs us women cannot do.

How would you handle this situation, what would you say. She is 11 soon

So much useful stuff on this thread, thank you. One of the things I find really useful re gender stereotypes, particularly with my eldest, is looking at kids' toy catalogues etc and discussing how the imagery compares with her own experience. For example, the one we have currently clearly placed Harry Potter paraphernalia like Lego in the boy's section, but DD1 knows that she and all her girlfriends love Harry Potter so that doesn't make any sense. We talk about how important and astute Hermione is and how the books were written by a woman. We discuss how ridiculous it would be if you had a room full of toys and you told kids they were only allowed to play with certain things if they were a girl or a boy. I really hope it's sinking in, I worry so much for them.

This is a great thread. My 10 year old loved those books about women trailblazers but still comes out with "why can't women be the president?". Lots of work to do! It's not always clear what wrong ideas they have internalised.
