Just when you think you can no longer be shocked

When I read this headline I thought it was describing the victim as 'a mother', as the media often does. But no, it's his own mother

So we can't even discuss an act of rape by a man, where the word transgender isn't even mentioned or hinted at, without being accused of transphobia. Presumably just in case. That's an... interesting (but not surprising) development.

Anyway, back to the case in the report.

It occurred to me that this whole family will have been torn apart by the fallout from this crime. Which is terribly sad both for the victim and for her grandchildren and for the children's mother. And any siblings will be affected too.

It's a really tragic case.

Sadly, this doesn't shock me. I worked with barristers for a long time and some of the horrors that I've read are beyond the pale.

Some men are just broken. I genuinely think some people are just wired wrong. We have people born with physical issues that we can't see but can diagnose, I think it's the same in the brain. They have no moral compass, ethics, awareness, or understanding of emotion.

I hope this woman and her family find a way through this.

Clymene · 16/10/2020 08:55

Fucking hell. Men are animals.

FairFriday · 16/10/2020 10:03

So this is where we are in 2020. Revolting attacks on women and people try to silence them.

Cocothefirst · 16/10/2020 16:33

I've heard of this type of thing before.

That poor woman.

DandyMandy · 16/10/2020 16:48

Horrible, but unfortunately not surprising. I hope the victim is okay and this animal gets everything he deserves. This type of thing is way more common than many realise. I remember reading something a few months ago and it was all about sons raping their elderly mothers that they're supposed to be looking after. That's also extremely common too. It made me feel ill.

EwwSprouts · 16/10/2020 16:56

So sorry for the mother. He's beyond understanding.

ArabellaScott · 16/10/2020 16:58

What a horrendous case. Let's hope he is put away for the protection of society, for a very long while. Although after the man who raped a 5 year old being LET OFF recently, who the hell knows.

I had no idea. No idea.

I didn't even think I was naïve I just thought this was a line that no man would cross. Sad Seems there actually is no line for some men. It's utterly sickening. And I bet he argued that she drove him to it. Didn't love him enough. Loved him too much. Didn't give him enough attention. Gave him too much attention. Wasn't strict enough in his upbeat
was too strict. Doesn't matter what it is, everything always seems to be a mother's fault.

That 'upbeat' was autocorrect deciding that that was the word I needed when I had clearly chosen 'upbringing'. Hmm

I know it happens, but I honestly never thought that a scummy man raping his vulnerable mother, who he’s supposed to be caring for, would be that common. JHC! That’s horrific.
CloudyVanilla · 16/10/2020 17:08

That's fucking disgusting. Why can't he be named? I hope it's to protect her identity and not his. What would you even do after something like that happening to you

NRatched · 17/10/2020 01:38

This is fucking disgusting. That poor woman..

It sounds an awful case to sit on (and obviously go through), but the fact that the judge said the jury would be excused for life after it, means its likely to be a lot worse than it seems, which is hard to even imagine Sad

The excuse, dropped a lighter and his mother woke to accuse him of 'having sex' is just pathetic. Mind, excuses like that have been known to work in court Hmm

Also hate 'having sex' instead of rape. Minimizing to the extreme.

darkstarzzz · 18/10/2020 17:58

Agreed, it's utterly horrific. But as several posters have said - not as uncommon as one might hope. I've worked in forensic psychiatry and regrettably this is something I've come across before.

Obviously, any man under a forensic psychiatry team is very unwell in addition to being dangerous. Not to claim mental illness as an excuse or justification, but in some cases it may offer an explanation. No idea whether that applies here.

Cwenthryth · 18/10/2020 18:15

FFS you can’t “have sex with” someone who’s asleep - they’re not conscious to be doing anything with you. Fucking media minimising rape.

How on earth do you rehabilitate a man who is capable of that? To his own mother?

GingerBeverage · 18/10/2020 18:54

The incest category on porn sites is hugely popular. More of these events will occur.

MoltenLasagne · 18/10/2020 18:54

Honestly I don't think you can. There is a great reluctance in the UK to acknowledge that certain people can never be released safely into society, so it seems we pretend instead that they can be and women and children bear the brunt of that.

DidoLamenting · 18/10/2020 19:03

It's not the first time I've heard of it. Whilst most people see incest as the depth of depravity I'm not sure why this combination of depravity would not exist given fathers rape their daughters and mothers sexually abuse their sons.
