Throughout history, women in rural Hunan Province used a coded script to express their most intimate thoughts to one another. Today, this once-“dead” language is making a comeback.

The Anne Frank example is a good one. She did prepare the diary with a view to broadcast and her father edited the finally published version.

The original is much more personal and clearly private.
