JKR & Britain’s “institutional transphobia”

Vinniepolis · 10/10/2020 23:16

Has anyone read Time magazine’s interview with Monroe Bergdorf? The writer (a “drag performer, screenwriter and author”) makes so many sweeping and untrue statements in just the one para that I am a bit 😲😲😲... among them that Britain is “institutionally transphobic” and the plot of JKR’s new novel “propogates dangerous mistruths about transgender people”...

If anything, Britain’s institutions are wholly lost in trans-admiration, while JKR’s book just doesn’t!

They lie every time they open their mouths. Not in the least surprised.

dolorsit · 11/10/2020 00:02

I assume Bergdorf has never heard of libel but surely Time magazine has. Confused

Dances · 11/10/2020 06:14

Lie and liars

Melroses · 11/10/2020 07:18

Never got past the front page.

How do they get away with writing such rubbish Confused

Times has wandered far from the path of good journalism.

I'm going to try to express this carefully, but I think that when your entire identity depends on creating and maintaining a visual deception, it's not surprising that you seek to bend the truth to fit your narrative in other ways too.

LizzieSiddal · 11/10/2020 09:06

Hope she threatens to sue unless they print a full page apology.

BlueCatRedCat · 11/10/2020 09:21

MB is a drag performer? Since when?

Saturday Night Live slandering JKR last night - implying she is anti Semitic as well as transphobic (although, funnily enough, they don't say what she said that is apparently hate against trans people). Not surprised, they are the wokest of woke on this programme. Not going to link to it, but it's on Youtube under "Weekend Update: Pete Davidson on J.K. Rowling’s Transphobic Comments - SNL" if you are interested.

I really wish she would sue these people for defamation.

DaisiesandButtercups · 11/10/2020 09:28

AbsintheFriends

Absolutely.

NotTerfNorCis · 11/10/2020 09:30

AbsintheFriends you've hit the nail in the head there. It's why we see so many blatant alternative facts floating around. The line between reality and fantasy is blurred.

Yes!
Vinniepolis · 11/10/2020 09:49

@BlueCatRedCat just to clear, it wasn’t MB who said those things but the person who interviewed MB and wrote the article - and that person describes him/herself as a drag artist etc.

Ah, apologies, Vinniepolis , that's actually clear from your OP, I misread (note to self: do not post on MN before first coffee of the day).

It's the whole impossibility of building an identity that demands other people think of you as you would wish them too.

The rest of this thread is great as well.

This summarises MB’s background pretty well:

AchieveBelieve · 11/10/2020 12:36

The interviewer was Amrou Al-Khadi who has written a book ‘Life as a Unicorn’. I don’t think Munroe has ever described themselves as a drag queen although she was a featured character in a TV show called The Drag Queens of London in 2014 - her profile on that show is attached.

I hate this insinuation that the U.K. is systemically transphobic. We’re just a country that doesn’t accept one of our most successful authors being viciously abused for simply stating that she believes in sex and sex protected spaces for victims of domestic violence, prisoners etc. And that we’re actually concerned that children are probably not best placed to decide they want to lose their fertility or any degree of sexual function at the age of 14 or 9, 10. Just because other countries ‘allow’ this we’re being made out to be some backwater that’s ‘behind the times’ rather than at the forefront of child safeguarding and ethical treatment. No one gives a stuff about anyone transitioning and living their life as an adult transman or transwoman as long as they’re not depriving women of the opportunities and fair play specifically set aside for women or denying women the choice of same sex intimate treatment/care if or when requested.

This is Amrou Al Khadi Smile

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 11/10/2020 12:57

Also, Amrou, like their friend Munroe absolutely loves lecturing women about what they are and are not, and what feminism should be about. Twat.

One of the things that's truly bizarre about the whole "transphobic Britain" charge is that the UK has always been much more comfortable with cross-dressing men than the US. It's embedded in British panto (from the dawn of time), and in British comedy, fashion and pop from around 1960 onwards.

Is being completely ignorant of all history and culture outside the US mandatory to be a TRA?

Yes, didn't the US have a heart attack over the 'I Want To Break Free' music video? I think they were banned on MTV?

(Creepy coincidence, but my music just shuffled and IWTBF came on as I was typing 😱 I really am a witch!!)

SunsetBeetch · 11/10/2020 15:28

Ffffuck she actually said that, and it was printed? Shock

Most publications have. It's rather tragic.

Pete Davidson who jokes about baby rape? That Pete Davidson?
Cismyfatarse1 · 11/10/2020 17:27

Amrou. The one who went to Eton and does drag for children (Denim. The reunion).

Wishingstarr · 11/10/2020 17:43

I detest that word "mistruths"

It's that awful mealy mouthed faux polite way of saying "lies"

Noone actually uses the word "mistruth" in conversation, it's gaslighting language

Its very patronizing, more self-righteous than you language that feels like control

It's actually controlling the narrative of truth and lies
