Disturbing

Awful but unsurprising that these women were put at further risk in mixed sex accommodation. It sounds like a very positive step that Salvo have created a new female only shelter, but whether 9 beds satisfies the need I don't know.

Oxyiz · 09/10/2020 12:43

Thats awful, those poor women. What can we do to help? Is there someone to write to?

334bu · 09/10/2020 12:49

Wonder why it is against the Geneva Convention to house female prisoners of war with male prisoners but in Britain in 2020 ,if you are homeless or even in prison you don't have the right to female only accommodation.

those poor women

the frustrating thing is that this ranks up there with "Pope is Cathlic" level knowledge. Anyone who has spent anytime in a shelter for homeless people knows they are very unsafe for women.

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/10/2020 13:09

Are we supposed to pretend its not an issue and that the rapists will have all sorts going on themselves and that there are robust safe guarding policies that should prevent this from happening?

Or can we admit its a fucking crazy idea to have mixed shelters when people are already in so much of a state they have no choice but to agree to stay there and take the risk..

MichelleofzeResistance · 09/10/2020 13:17

But This Never Happens.

There's no reason for women to fear men, they don't do this.
And if they did, it's only a few of them.
And anyway, it isn't just men.

And they're going to do it anyway, even if there's single sex provision.
And Other Bullshit Too.

Angry

Mixed sex provision is not desired by women and does not work for women. It is desired by men because it works for men.

And any idiot can predict: if beds are designated 'female only' for the needs and benefit of very vulnerable women, they will become an immediate target to be captured by people born male.

Angryresister · 09/10/2020 13:25

When we write to our oh so woke MPs the link should be sent to show that yes this does happen, and women only sex segregated hostels, hospital , and changing rooms are to women’s safetry and should be funded properly

BrassicaRabbit · 09/10/2020 13:39

These are the wrong kind of vulnerable people, aren't they. Too much cognitive dissonance. Ignore!

Trixie18 · 09/10/2020 13:44

It's heartbreaking how little money has been raised for this. Going to have to dig deep again ffs!

highame · 09/10/2020 14:30

I'm glad this is being reported and it's about time vulnerable women were cared for. Where the hell is the real care. Ideology needs ditching, women need to get loud and angry

ThinEndOfTheWedge · 09/10/2020 20:12

It’s so bloody predictable - you only need half a brain cell to know this would happen. Policy makers should be held culpable.

Those poor women - it’s not as if life has been shit enough to them.

I lived in a mixed sex hostel for homeless youth as a teenager. Surely no one is remotely shocked by this report. And I'd be astounded if any of these women only experienced the one rape or assault. It doesn't work like that in these places. You're not raped or assaulted once and then people step in and it stops. It's nearly every night. It's normal. Nobody cares. Nobody does anything.
I cannot stress enough how regularly you are assaulted in homeless accommodation.

yourhairiswinterfire · 09/10/2020 21:00

People are truly vile about vulnerable women.

The keeping prisons single sex debate unmasked some downright horrific people that believe if women don't want to be raped in prison, they shouldn't break the law in the first place then Hmm

Poor women should just get a decent job like everyone else. Mothers in homeless shelters shouldn't have 'pumped out' so many babies. Women fleeing abusive relationships and staying in a refuge should have thought about that then before getting into the relationship, and on and on and on.

Women in these positions are just totally disregarded and victim blamed. People justify not giving a shit because 'these types of women bring it on themselves'. Makes me sick to my stomach.

ManOfPies · 10/10/2020 01:37

I'd imagine part of the issue is that around 85% of homeless people are male, so females are hugely outnumbered and also a very low proportion of the whole, which is likely why so few female-only hostels exist.

Helping homeless men would likely improve the situation for both genders, although services aimed at women are likely key too.

wellbehavedwomen · 10/10/2020 06:20

Oh God, that's awful.

Single sex accommodation for vulnerable women is such a basic, slam-dunk obvious need. Hospitals (especially psych wards), prisons, shelters, refuges. Women need freedom from the potential of male violence to heal... and just to be safe.

PearPickingPorky · 10/10/2020 07:23

Sexes. You mean sexes.

Helping homeless men is not likely to stop the predatory men who choose to rape homeless women, is it.
