Pronouns in work email

I work with a "woke" group of people and they want people to add their pronouns to their email signatures. I have a difficult foreign name and yet no one has ever got my pronoun wrong. And if they did I would gently correct them and not think of it again. I don't want to add my pronoun to my signature. I don't know why but I just don't. Same way as I don't want my ethnicity or my disability on there. Am just an awkward private person. If I say no, will I be seen as difficult/prejudiced? I am neither of these things.

Would they make you put whether you're a Mrs/Ms/Miss in your email signature too? It seems equally inappropriate to me.

Penyu · 07/10/2020 22:09

That's crazy. I don't blame you and I would feel the same.
I found out at the weekend that my school is wanting to raise money for Mermaids this year as their chosen charity. I feel like I can't say anything or I will also be the prejudiced one on staff. Ffs.

I would just say you don’t feel comfortable about it for personal reasons. They can’t argue with that - maybe you are wrestling with your gender identity and don’t want to talk about it.

I have no answers but experiencing the same thing at work.

We are encouraged to include our pronouns and a lot of people have, and this gets praised by senior staff. A few of us have not, but we are fewer as time goes on.

Like you, I just don't want to do it and resist this pressure in the workplace, especially as it's done under an illusion of inclusion.

Why can inclusion not include those who don't feel the need for this.

imhereforthesanity · 07/10/2020 22:13

There was a thread about this recently with lots of useful ways of saying you don't want too, I'll see if I can find it.

LockdownLump · 07/10/2020 22:19

Yes there was another thread. I can't wait for my work to ask me.

There is something in the other thread with what I would describe as a semi-scientific anecdote. If that's a thing 😂

It was how if you identify yourself as. Female, you are treated detrimentally by colleagues /associates.

Emails left unanswered, different tone in correspondence (detrimental to females) etc

If you are really pushed just say 'I am not comfortable sharing my gender and this conversation is triggering for me'.

They will then leave you alone.

must be hard @Penyu but I'm sure the people on here will help if you start a thread.

Or use male pronouns. See what happens.

IF I have to deal with this at work I intend to use xe, xym, xyrs . Entirely separately from the trans aspect I like the idea of gender neutral pronouns, and it's a good foundation for rejecting the cis label.

Can you be fired/reprimanded for. It complying? Surely employment law has some protecting for people who don’t agree with this? Any legal experts out there?
I’m seeing more and more of this, just recently a newish graduate - at a firm I used to work for - boasting on LinkedIn that she has won some Diversity award by forcing pronouns on everyone’s email signature. FFS. No way would I go along with it.

ilovejennimurray · 08/10/2020 22:43

*not complying

SmallPug · 08/10/2020 23:56

You can definitely speak out. The school won’t want to be associated with Mermaids! I’m sure there are plenty of reputable sources of info you can show the school. There’s been so much about Mermaids. I’m amazed the school would want to do that!

SmallPug · 08/10/2020 23:57

Sorry, that was for @penyu
