Liberal Democrats are to vote on including preferred pronouns on attendees' badges at their party's conference – despite the fact that the entire event is being staged online because of the coronavirus pandemic."

It was mocked by Lib Dem sources as demonstrating how out of touch the party risked becoming, with one saying: "It's an absolute joke [that] we are, at our conference, deciding what pronouns to call each other.

"As the economy struggles and millions of people are worrying if they will have a job and pay the bills, we are talking about what to put on a lanyard.

"The party is in a dreadful state and this is the best example of it. It's dire, utterly dire. Of course this stuff matters to some people, so just do it, rather than debating it. It's a sign of a party that's run out of ideas."

The Lib Dems - the irrelevant gift that keeps on giving. I'm sure they will keep us well entertained in the coming weeks. Grin

I've voted LD a lot over the years. Even I think this is a load of complete nonsense. They need to start focusing on the very many massively important issues of the day and not get sidetracked by devisive issues that benefit a tiny number of people and potentially piss off or put off lots of others. Very depressing.

They just keep hitting themselves on the head with that hammer don’t they?

I mean, in an awful way it's funny, but we have no legitimate opposition, an incompetent leadership, and some of the most colossal social, economic, and geo-political challenges imaginable bearing down fast. And one of the three main parties is debating pronouns. On badges. On a conference via Zoom.

I think it's to avoid weeping that I'm laughing. Politically homeless for ever it seems.

Why not just use first name and surname?

SerenityNowwwww · 26/09/2020 10:28

Because that’s not the point is it?

SerenityNowwwww · 26/09/2020 10:29

When I started working my company was pretty international and I worked with people from all over the world. This was in ye olden days before Skype and we actually wrote letters.

If you got a name that you didn’t recognise there was a risk you might call someone Mr X or Ms X. It happened to me. We all laughed it off...

Yes. But common sense is now even less common than it used to be.

Of course this was when my director sent her secretary home to change when she turned up to work in trousers. She was American and a bit ‘bible belt’ though.

Deliriumoftheendless · 26/09/2020 11:05

I see pronouns on some insta accounts.

I’ve yet to see anyone I wouldn’t automatically use their preferred pronoun for just going on appearance.

I don’t know how often I’d use pronouns on insta.

It reminds me of “greenwashing” by big companies.

That ship sailed long ago. And as they’ve stated in the past that they don’t want GC members, they may even pick up a few new supporters who love nothing more than squabbling and name-calling. Perfect match, really.

SerenityNowwwww · 26/09/2020 12:30

I read that as shirt size 8! I’ve really got to wear my reading glasses!
