A pat on the back for grassroots women. Lovely read. Thanks James

I don’t think the Spectator has quite the same kind of comment culture that the Times has - which will probably change as the Spectator’s subs increase. I think a lot of people get it delivered in magazine form. I usually find only tens of comments under Spectator articles, whereas the Times will have hundreds of people commenting and replying to each other on the issues.

😂

Sometimes it feels hard to keep being positive/proactive so I take whatever encouragement there is

EyesOpening · 22/09/2020 15:47

Thank you James
Thank you FWR
Thank you JKR
Thanks to all the others
and thank God!

I'm immensely proud of British feminists and women's rights activists who have achieved the seemingly impossible in the face of so many obstacles. Bans, suspensions, censorship, harassment, threats, doxxing, loss of employment, even arrests or finding themselves in court. The gender identity lobby threw everything they could to stop any of this from reaching the public, and women in the UK still managed to raise awareness and build opposition to self-id.
Also all the women who couldn't risk being publicly open about their views, but still quietly supported the fight for our rights by emailing politicians and writing to schools and institutions, filling out consultations, donating money to the ever expanding list of court cases, handing out leaflets or speaking to friends and family.

Even though there's lots left to do, if you take a step back and look at it all - it really is phenomenal what women have managed to achieve. Smile

Datun · 22/09/2020 15:52

@LetMeJustLookAtTheFuckingHam

Well this article is nice for all the everyone ignores the feminist section as you're just an echo chamber of middle aged harridans spouting transphobia so it's completely useless and pointless posts that pop up regularly from new usernames whack a mole style.

Ha.

Indeed 😁

James' articles always sounds eminently reasonable, there's nothing of the rant about them.

And he credits women.

It's been noted. (it's also be noted that it's a shame it's been noted, because it means it's rare...)

All in all, this is a good day.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 22/09/2020 15:54

@AbsintheFriends

James Kirkup is brilliant.

I'd be happy to see a debate in parliament. One of the things I've always found most shocking about all of this was the open admission (from James Morton??) that their deliberate tactic was to get legislation through under the public radar, and their triumphant self-congratulation at using equal marriage as the trojan horse. (Think I've got those details right - forgive if not.)

Let's actually examine ALL the implications legal fiction that people can change sex, from ALL angles. Let's scrutinise ALL the consequences of that law, intended and unintended. Bring it on.

Yes, their stated aim was to hoodwink the general public by using more popular campaigns and human rights causes, and avoiding publicity. It's in a document linked to Dentons, among others, who have a partner who is also the secretary to the board of directors of the RFKHR organisation whose award JKR handed back. It's all very high level corporate stuff Shock

94,850 now - it must be being shared widely

Yeah, I've seen a few trans activists openly sharing post codes and links to places to get post codes in order to get around the requirement to be a UK citizen when they're coming from the US and elsewhere.

RoyalCorgi · 22/09/2020 15:58

I'm fascinated by the Spectator. The comments sections are filled by people who are right-wing, anti-feminist, massively pro-Brexit, deplore Black Lives Matter and think masks are a left-wing plot. And yet the Speccie continues publishing articles that are pro-women and sometimes left of centre. It makes me wonder what their actual readership is like, as opposed to their commenting readership. Their circulation has increased massively - is it now read principally by gender-critical feminists who have spurned the Guardian? Or are we still a minority amongst the far-right nutters?

ChattyLion · 22/09/2020 16:05

That postcode gaming is really annoying. Can they not discount the responses where the same postcodes are used multiple times from IP addresses outside the UK? I have no idea how these things work

Gingernaut · 22/09/2020 16:10

To think. The effort they went to. All for naught. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🙄🙄

MoltenLasagne · 22/09/2020 16:12

I loved the article and particularly the clear call out of the grassroots action that has been so successful.

I must say I find it quite unnerving that people outside the UK think they have the right to influence our democratic processes through deceit. Oh well, if it gets a debate let's turn up with our ever growing list of "not our crimes" and ask how these criminals got a GRC and why it was ever considered logical to record them as female crimes.

MichelleofzeResistance · 22/09/2020 16:17

Bravo uppity bitches everywhere.

When that petition reaches 100,000 there will be a short, polite note with a link to the (highly expensive, several years long) consultation into the GRA and the conclusions drawn. That's the reform there, it's happened.

CivilCervix · 22/09/2020 16:29

Well done women of FWR, sterling work!

I agree with some of the pp's that there hasn't been enough debate on this. Debate is welcome. So much effort has been put into silencing the concerns of women with cries of bigotry that even institutions that claim to be dedicated to impartial coverage - side eye at the BBC - have capitulated. The BBC ffs, embroiled in its own equality drama - claiming to be putting its own house in order when it comes to women's rights - doing the work of the misogynists is one of the most disappointing aspects of this.

Thank goodness for journalists like James and Janice. There will be further battles, but self ID has not been introduced today! Thanks all Thanks

Malahaha · 22/09/2020 16:31

@jhuizinga

Thank you, James. It's because of your articles that I have a subscription to the Spectator (something that a few years ago as a then lifelong dyed in the wool Guardian reader, I couldn't have imagined reading). I don't agree with everything I read in the Spectator, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I do tend to avoid the below the line comments though.
I've subscriptions to the Times and the Spectator and I'm not British not live in the UK but want to support the most forward-looking country when it comes to GC activism.
Summerdayshaze · 22/09/2020 16:39

Woohoo!

TinselAngel · 22/09/2020 16:44

Thanks for your article about the spousal exit clause James, if you're lurking, it was good to not be the only person writing about it, for once!

TheRealMcKennaDonsTinfoilHat · 22/09/2020 16:52

@EyesOpening

Thank you James Thank you FWR Thank you JKR Thanks to all the others and thank God!
Amen!
JoodyBlue · 22/09/2020 16:53

I fear that the movement pushing for Self ID however will not go away until the arguments see the light of day in real life and off social media. I hope more people will feel free to share this subject and talk about it more openly now. There is a support from the current government in this statement. It may not always be the case, governments change and there is a powerful lobby pushing for self ID. I agree it is not over. The genius is in youth capture, it is the way the young are rebelling against their parents. Sadly it may turn out to be more harmful than the methods of revolt chosen by their own parents. I've had messages from people who had no idea this was happening, so time to raise awareness perhaps.

Kazakaren · 22/09/2020 16:56

Thank you James. And to all the brave wonderful women who had so much to lose (and some men) who made this happen. There's just so many of you. And thanks @MNHQ for letting the conversation happen, despite all the attempts to silence us. I know there's still a long way to go. But this is a good start.

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 22/09/2020 17:02

Cheers James!

As for postcodes, Liz Truss isn't stupid. She knows Stonewall tried & failed to game the consultation.

Theluggage15 · 22/09/2020 17:10

Nice one James!

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/09/2020 17:11

Thank you @JamesKirkup Wine

Well done all of us!

And thanks @MNHQ for letting the conversation happen, despite all the attempts to silence us. I know there's still a long way to go. But this is a good start.

Indeed. Thank you @JustineMumsnet and @MNHQ

AnnaMagnani · 22/09/2020 17:17

That petition was trending on twitter yesterday.

Every post for ages of scrolling seemed to be either by Americans or bots.

Given TRAs have already gamed one consultation that way, it's not likely that the government are falling for it again.

NotAtMyAge · 22/09/2020 17:18

What the petition organisers don't realise is that even if a debate is granted, it will only be a small one in Westminster Hall or a committee room, probably with very few MPs bothering to attend, not a full debate in the House of Commons.
