I think there's a French conman in one of Dorothy L. Sayers' Montague Egg short stories who dresses very convincingly as a fashionable young woman. He gives himself away when he loses his temper and uses masculine gendered term about himself, asking "Do you take me for an idiot?" using 'un fou' instead of 'une folle'.

Imagine being trans in a culture where every noun and adjective you use about yourself is a potential giveaway and you have the verbal habits of a lifetime to overcome!
