Thanks ArabellaScott. Is the debate automatically recorded to be viewed later?

Yes, and the Official Report (Hansard) will be published later this evening.

Thanks for that. Must admit a lot is beyond my knowledge... can anyone briefly explain the OBFA and Named Persons acts and issues please?!

Sillydoggy · 09/09/2020 19:26

Named persons act as described was well intentioned and badly written legislation. It was dragged through the courts and the Scottish govt eventually lost. The idea was that one person was responsible for a child’s wellbeing in all areas and this was not to be the child’s parents. The named person was to be given rights to consent on behalf of the child if the parents disagreed (yes transition probably would have been covered by this). This involved issues with data sharing, continuity of named person, parental rights, trust in the named person and so on. I presume it was a warning shot to the SG that this will end up in the courts as well.

Johanna Lamont pointed out that Patrick Harvey had accused her of stirring up hatred when she organised meetings to discuss the GRA in th Scottish Parliament. Patrick Harvey shouted at her and said he had been accused of it too at the Pride march. If anyone didn’t understand the issue with the bill that exchange provided a great illustration of the issue.

SoftlySoftly123 · 09/09/2020 19:57

From the thread, Murdo Fraser expressed concerns about cancel culture. Later on: "Patrick Harvie says he is not interested in hearing Murdo Fraser's concerns that others have been silenced."

Nomnomarrgh · 09/09/2020 20:19

Ominous statement, that.

ArabellaScott · 09/09/2020 20:33

Why is 'misogynist harassment' different to all the other hate crimes? Why can't it just be added in?

Basically they're saying women just can't be having the protection that other protected characteristics can .

I mean, personally, I think 'hate crime' is nonsense and shouldn't be legislated on, I don't want a misogyny offence added.

Existing laws should be adequate - perhaps we need to look closely at rape laws, though.

I expect if there is 'hate' and the govt wishes to intervene then they might be better served to try other approaches than punishing thought crime. It's a slippery slope, as this bill evidences.

Yes, and the Official Report (Hansard) will be published later this evening.
Hansard only applies to the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Here is the report.

Yes, I added (Hansard) as sometimes people are more familiar with that term. Thanks for the link.

I am tired and a thicko... but this is going back to the Judicary committee>? Very disappointed to not see a single lab MP vote against or the greens - were they whipped? only cons voted against.

morningtoncrescent62 · 09/09/2020 23:30

The video is available on the Scottish Parliament website. www.scottishparliament.tv/meeting/debate-hate-crime-and-public-order-scotland-bill-september-9-2020

Johann Lamont's speech, including Harvie's response to her, starts at about 16:40.

fatblackcatspaw · 09/09/2020 23:51
