Yay!

I've really warmed to her recently.

I hope that's not why Jane left though?

WhereAreWeNow · 07/09/2020 09:19

That's good. I like Emma Barnett. But I'm still really gutted about both Jane and Jenni going. It won't be the same without them.

Doyoumind · 07/09/2020 09:44

She's been very good when she has filled in before. I thought she would be the first choice.

I can't remember what it was but I did see something that suggested she's not GC. But she's very capable of dealing with controversial topics fairly.

OhHolyJesus · 07/09/2020 09:54

I really did like her and enjoyed her book "Period. About Bloody Time" until she conflated intersex with trans. One chapter was about a woman born without a womb and wishing she had periods, and it was juxtaposed with a transman wishing not to have periods.

I was disappointed.

Has she said something specifically GC? I think a lot of women don't want to have periods, there was no need to reference trans at all, and she is a sufferer of endometriosis.

Agree about Emma Barnett - she is a proper presenter who can take on different sides of a debate. I think there are quite a few changes going on on Radio 4 with the new BBC director and new editor for Today. It could be positive. Then again, it might not but so far I am pleased that Tim Davie has been highlighting the need for impartiality at the BBC.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/09/2020 10:08

Seems reasonable to me to include trans men as one category of biological women. They have periods.

OhHolyJesus · 07/09/2020 10:11

Yes they do Countess because they are women. Same as the woman with the DSD condition. She is also a woman. I was annoyed at the conflation, not the fact she included these two cases.

As long as she's fair, balanced and gets the nuances, I'll be happy.
Antibles · 07/09/2020 10:41

I don't think she disguises her partiality on some issues very well. I'd be amazed if she didn't vote Remain for example. In my opinion, she can get a bit obviously grumpy with callers she disagrees with. She does asks the critical questions of the side she agrees with but her tone gives her away imo.

I'm prepared to be disappointed on the GC front on WH but I'll be very happy to be proved wrong.

Emma Barnett wiped the floor with Jo Swinson during the General Election campaign last year regarding the GRA etc.

Oh my goodness. That was painful. She completely eviscerated her. Well full marks to Emma.

stumbledin · 07/09/2020 14:34

Dont listen to WH but this will send it down the drain.

EB is hopeless on newsnight - but maybe they think she will do better on "soft" women's (ie twaw) issues.

Suspect it will not be Women's Hour for long but become Gender Hour.

I'm not a fan of Emma Barrnet but then I wasn't a fan of Jenni Murry either.

I can't really take Emma Barrnet seriously after she asked Angela Raynor if she would nationalise sausages on question time last year.

CivilCervix · 07/09/2020 15:15

I am a big fan of Emma Barnett. Proper journalist, pulls no punches and isn't afraid to ask difficult questions. This is great news.

Difficult questions like "will you nationalise sausages"?

I agree. Shes an obvious choice and I really hope she doesn't let us down

That's a random question. What was the context behind the nationalised sausage query?

I somehow missed this too but Angela Rayner was on a Question Time panel. An audience member asked about the climate crisis and Angela R mentioned encouraging less meat consumption. Cue the sausage question....
