I don't watch Discovery and this won't make me start.

What's your point?

theDudesmummy · 03/09/2020 12:52

What do you mean, what's the point? The point of Star Trek or the point of representing transgender people in popular culture?

Gottalife · 03/09/2020 12:53

@Rhynswynd

I don't watch Discovery and this won't make me start.

What's your point?

The show's co-runner and executive producer Michelle Paradise added: "It believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach."

Watch and learn.

What a wierd thing to say - Next Gen, DS9, Enterprise, and probably TOS (although I can't think who offhand) have had races which required 1, 2 or 3 sexes to reproduce, or who had 'evolved beyond' sexual reproduction and were asexual.

Can't see what's so special here at all.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 03/09/2020 12:56

"It believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach."

Huh? But they're at war with Klingons ('race'), babies are still grown by females of whichever race, and I guess that means they'll not be featuring Ferengi in Discovery.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 03/09/2020 12:58

I tell a lie - in Enterprise the aliens had swapped round who carries the child, and it was Trip who got pregnant. So not always females.

SpaceOP · 03/09/2020 12:59

Well, I'd like to see how it's handled before I get upset or excited. Does the trans character think that they get to trample over the rights of the female characters, for example.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 03/09/2020 13:03

That’s the joy of science fiction.

We have already had MTF Dr Who - so surely this is a bit yesterday and utterly tedious

That was my immediate reaction on seeing the BBC article. (As an aside, one of Peter Hamilton's novels has an alien species with 7 sexes involved in reproduction.)
ErrolTheDragon · 03/09/2020 13:18

They've done all sorts of things in the past.

I don't suppose they'd be able do the Dr Crusher and the Trill story the same way nowadays.

Winesalot · 03/09/2020 13:45

That is pretty much my thoughts. I mean it feels also that androgynous characters have been done too, what is so particularly special about Discovery having someone who is NB? It should actually be just par for the course on Star Trek.

Great that they have parts though and I look forward to them having storylines that are relevant.

bellinisurge · 03/09/2020 15:01

Wow. I'm so impressed. It's fantastic [you can't tell the sarcasm in my voice from reading this but it's there]

Terrace58 · 03/09/2020 15:13

Was talking about this with DH last night. He is more “woke” than I am and even he is a bit worried. They are reportedly going to have a trans and a non-binary character. That makes it feel a bit check-boxy. If it’s done well, then great, but if they just shove those characters to the forefront for a “very special episode” than it will be disappointing.

One thing I like about discovery is that it does have characters who are clearly not neuro-typical, but rarely makes a big deal out of it. There was one another episode where the Emperor made a quip about how she wouldn’t tolerate crew like them and it’s just little moments like that where they highlight the uniqueness. They have never hit us over the head with it. Sort of like how there were men in dresses in Next generation and no one said anything (well, except someone with power over the show because they stopped doing it quickly). If they can introduce some interesting characters who just happen to be different, then That is great.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 03/09/2020 15:22

watch and learn

Errmm, no

(Star wars is heaps better that star trek...apart from the tribbles)

Winesalot · 03/09/2020 15:29

Did you find those troublesome tribbles yet, Rufus?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 03/09/2020 15:31

No I didn’t wines

Though there is a weird noise coming from the garden shed

Just a little too frightened to look.....

Winesalot · 03/09/2020 16:22

Still too frightened, I can imagine. . I will keep looking to the news though. Family found alive and well but covered over by tribbles!

aliasundercover · 03/09/2020 18:35

Only seven? The way Stonewall are pushing things it could potentially be over 100.

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/09/2020 18:37

Will I offend anyone if I say Farscape was better than both the Star Trek and Star Wars?

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/09/2020 18:38

Sorry for the extra The which makes me sound like Star Fire from Teen Titans 😂

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/09/2020 18:40

STTNG The Outcast episode? Not sure why they think this is novel, tbh. Been done on Star Trek before. Precious snowflakes might not have seen it though.

iklboo · 03/09/2020 18:44

I was very 'so'? Millions of alien species, first mixed-race kiss on television and they're getting all excited about trans / non-binary. What next? Picard in drag? Furries? Puppy play on the bridge?

Kit19 · 03/09/2020 18:51

The only interesting thing about this is that the bbc felt the need to include it in its news bulletins

OhMsBeliever · 03/09/2020 19:03

Watch and learn? It's science fiction, not fact. They can pretend on there that people can change sex, doesn't mean it can actually be done in real life.

Until they invent transporters in real life I will treat the whole of Star Trek as the fantasy it is.

DialSquare · 03/09/2020 19:04

I'm surprised the furries haven't claimed Maya from Space 1999 yet.
