'Cogenitor', in Enterprise, had a third sex necessary for reproduction. These people were treated as objects and kept illiterate despite being as intelligent as the males and females. Stepping outside of their tight gender role was impossible. Really sad, that one stuck in my mind.

nosswith · 03/09/2020 19:46

US shows have often being a bit 'tick-boxy' though the original series of Star Trek was a trailblazer in many respects.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 03/09/2020 20:04

Will I offend anyone if I say Farscape was better than both the Star Trek and Star Wars?

Offend, no, but I don't agree.. now Babylon 5.....

In 'The Orville' they have a race that is all 'male' except they're not, they surgically alter females at birth - considering it's Seth MacFarlane, it was surprisingly well done (and The Orville is worth a watch - harks back to TOS/Next Gen in some good ways)

DarkmilkAddict · 03/09/2020 20:08

How about everyone’s non binary and the producers don’t include any gender stereotyping at all

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 03/09/2020 20:16

Spoilers:

But then how would they know who to make the ditzy one who doesn't realise how intelligent she is, and who to make the brooding, strong but with hidden secrets one (or more than one)?

How, then, would it be cool that the lead is called Michael, despite being female, and that they had a female captain - obviously dead early so they could put a real, man-type one in place later.

That’s brilliant. What a first! What a breakthrough! It’s about time there were trans/none binary people on Star Trek. Obviously, it’s a first. Oh hold on.... Hmm

“Babylon 5 is a big pile of shit!”

(Sorry, I always hear Simon Pegg when Babylon 5 is mentioned)

I preferred Blake’s 7.

bellinisurge · 03/09/2020 21:10

Plenty of non binary storylines in Star Trek before. This isn't the big deal it is cracked up to be.
Kind of predictable to think that this is the only generation to discover sex, gender issues etc

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 03/09/2020 21:18

If there’s no division on the basis of gender, how would you indicate you are now identifying as a different gender?

OhMsBeliever · 03/09/2020 21:18

I've spent the afternoon/evening watching Star Trek films and in Nemesis, made in 2002, at the wedding of Troi and Riker, Data begins his speech with "Ladies, Gentlemen and invited transgender species" so it's not like they've never done anything like this before.

Although may as they said transgender species they didn't mean humans so it is actually hugely transphobic?

Anyway, it has been a lovely afternoon with my kids, I'm glad I managed to get them into Star Trek. Grin

I know some MNers love to find jokes offensive but I struggle to see how anyone could complain about that one.

If it's authentic, the character will presumably tell everyone they meet how incredibly oppressed they are. That and the blue hair.

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/09/2020 21:47

Surely there have been loads of non binary characters before. This will be the first non binary human.

And how are we meant to know that some of the other characters having been trans? Have we all been assuming genders?

FlibbertyGiblets · 03/09/2020 22:19

I'm an awful person, laughed too hard at blue hair. Off to the gulag I go.

ItsLateHumpty · 03/09/2020 22:56

Did the OP not come back?

Seems we already ‘watch(ed) and learn(ed)’ since 1966.

“The Original Series establishes the two most crucial elements of the Star Trek ethos: The show is set in a utopian future in which divides based on race, gender, and nationality are a thing of the past (reflected in the unprecedented diversity of the main cast)”

As a kid I always loved how no one seemed to get paid, every one/job was equal, except the captain obvs had a few perks. And generally the only ‘bad’ people weren’t on the crew.

I guess when we can treat all people in all nations as equal, not have egos that rely on status, money is redundant, and the only ‘bad’ people are off planet, then we won’t have the the ruling class (men) who need a class to subjugate (women) so sex / gender will all be largely irrelevant.

Voice0fReason · 03/09/2020 23:12

This is science fiction.
They do a whole array of things that aren't scientifically possible or make no sense in the real world.
This is nothing new - it's just a bit of fun.

DeliciouslyFemale · 03/09/2020 23:17

Such a pity they didn’t think about adding sex to that list.

Why? There still are some divides by sex, the humans are still dimorphic.

Anyway, I'll suspend my judgement till I've seen it. Discovery starts from a base of lots of having lots of good female characters.

Suffrajester · 04/09/2020 08:13

This might be a nice storyline, maybe the character's from a colony or culture that still believes in gender norms. Coming aboard the Discovery she'd meet butch lesbian Jett Reno, tough and ruthless Emperor Giorgiou, and soft and gentle Saru, and maybe realise that women and men can be whatever they like and their sex doesn't imply anything more about them than their reproductive role.
Ah who am I kidding, it'll be regressive nonsense pretending to be woke and utopian.

DeliciouslyFemale · 04/09/2020 08:44

I totally agree, however, the female human characters are still judged on their sex appeal to men and very few are in positions of power. There’s Janeway, but the rest of her crew still have men at the top.

Dervel · 04/09/2020 08:47

This seems pertinent to the culture we find ourselves in today:

startrek90 · 04/09/2020 08:49

I fail to see how this is news? Star trek has had many storylines that have non-binary or transgender characters. They have had gay and straight characters and grappled with storylines that deal with all of those issues.

I am a huge fan of star trek but I personally find Discovery not nearly as good as the other series. Loved Picard though and can't wait for the second season.

Also in what planet is Farscape better than Star Trek??? Thats crazy talk WinkGrin

Did you actually watch Discovery? There were lots of powerful women in it. The admiral, captain/empress Giorgiou, the Klingon leader, and the central character Michael. most of the bridge staff who aren't just in the background. That's before getting to Jett Leno and the clever shy one with massive imposter syndrome. If the latter was the only important female character in the show it would be annoying but as she's not I rather like that role as it's reality for a lot of young women now.

To be fair, I haven’t watched it for some time. I get my kick from zombies nowadays. Grin
