Satire

I realise this has been touched on repeatedly in other threads, but thought it might deserve specific highlighting.

Censorship of (The Wrong Kind Of) satire seems to be speeding up and is, in my opinion, one of the most ominous elements of what's going on.

The removal of Jarvis Dupont from Twitter is a stark example we probably all know about, but there are many subtler ones.
I've noticed that the threads which are deleted here (MN) seem disproportionately to be the satirical ones (one of these - about pronouns - went this morning, for example; I can think of others, but don't want to list them for fear of deletion - of course).
Laughter is one of the most powerful forms of dissent. We need to notice what they're doing here, and to feel free to keep laughing....

100% Gin (because there is no tequila bottle Sad)

I can't quite work out why there seems to be such a movement to specifically stop people laughing at silliness (e.g., threads giving goofy pronoun options; threads suggesting ludicrous examples which highlight silly logical endpoints of woke notions). It's so far from actual "hate" that I can't understand how even the most die-hard TWAWers can justify it. Someone must have written about this - any ideas for where to look for analysis/articles?

Did anyone else see this a couple of weeks ago?

Crazy you being this up as I JUST posted an anecdote about this in a request for workplace wokery stories (I don't intend to promote that post, just share as my reply was relevant to this thread).

I shared how odd it was that a young co-worker couldn't recognize satire/irony. It makes me wonder if humor is changing or are people fearful of satire? Not sure, but interested as I've seen this irl.

It’s because ridiculing something is a more powerful message than arguing against it. Anyone else remember the Geordie lad, who had posted jokey pictures of his reaction to finding out the “girl” he’d complemented on a dating app wasn’t a girl. The wrath of the transactions that elite fell upon him and he thought it was hilarious.

Laughing makes a statement that the argument is so ludicrous that it’s not worthy of discussion. Which is where people will be when they look back at this time period and wonder how on earth a group of men managed to convince anyone that they were women, even though they were claiming to be pubescent girls at 60, were wearing miniskirts and fishnet stockings, and boasting publically about their new breasts.

McKenna, that bookstore display is priceless. Sadly, it seems they have now not only deleted the tweet and removed Titania's book from the display, but also removed it from sale, and probably burned any remaining copies.

RozWatching · 01/09/2020 19:11

The bookstore thing reminded me of that time when the Advocate Magazine quoted Jarvis Dupont in some trans-related story. When someone pointed out to them that JD is not a real person, they put out a sort-of correction saying that the person quoted was a troll but they stood by his words 🤣

WriterlyMess · 01/09/2020 19:17

Titania on here for an AMA?

TheRealMcKenna · 01/09/2020 19:21

Falleninwiththewrongcrowd I really hope they didn’t burn the books. I’d hate to think of the meaningless addition of CO2 to the atmosphere. Fortunately, my screenshot will remain in my photo library forever!

Roz I think I remember the Jarvis DuPont article, but I can’t remember what it was about. For some reason I thought it was Penis News, but that may be because of my honourable mention in the esteemed publication today (still polishing my tinfoil hat).

I will miss Jarvis from Twitter. I think it’s only a matter of time before Lisa gets a permanent ban as well, but I really hope not.

TheRealMcKenna · 01/09/2020 20:00

RozWatching Was this the article about Jarvis Dupont?

I can’t believe this was January. It seems much more recent than that.

Found it (the edited version)

www.advocate.com/transgender/2019/12/20/golden-globes-host-ricky-gervais-goes-transphobic-tweetstorm

"Harry Potter creator Rowling set social media on fire when she publicly defended Maya Forstater, a cisgender woman who was fired for transphobic tweets after a judge ruled her controversial views were not protected under England’s antidiscrimination laws.

Many on social media declared Rowling canceled for her anti-trans comment, but Gervais, who’s made transphobic comments in the past, has sided with the author.

Gervais’s latest string of hateful rhetoric came in response to the person behind a troll account who called Rowling a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) and lamented that she would never be welcome at Hogwarts.

“Speaking as a trans woman, the thought that I will no longer be welcome in a fictional school for wizards has destroyed me,” wrote Twitter user Jarvis Dupont, which is considered a troll account, not actually representing a trans woman.

Still, Gervais's response dripped with anti-trans sarcasm whether he was responding to a troll account or not."

TheRealMcKenna · 01/09/2020 21:10

RozWatching so BOTH the Advocate and Penis News thought Jarvis Dupont was real! That’s terrifying.
