This is excellent. Very clear and works through prominent feminist writers to explain why radical feminists are gender critical. We often have women new to FWR asking for explanations; this would be a good resource.

What is gender critical feminism (and why is everybody so mad about it)?

Is that a howling gale I can hear in the background? I kept waiting for the windows to blow in!

Excellent lecture though.

Also, I think that a difference between radical feminism then and now was that 'then' we were not so much concerned with sex identity. No one was really challenging what a woman was. So when we talked about essentialism we meant something slightly different. Bear in mind that there was debate and that the category 'radical feminist' wasn't unitary. There were geographical differences and a sub-set of feminists (such as Mary Daly, Susan Griffin, and a few Wicca feminists, amongst others) did posit an instrinsic female nature (that was better than men's). At the time, the criticism of essentialism was more about power and essentialising men's power over women (not quite so much what a woman 'is').

Also, us socialist feminists were arguing that a lot of it was about who looked after the children, did the housework and gave up their income on marriage.

Personally, in heterosexual relationships, I think it still is.

An enormous storm blew through southern and eastern Victoria two days ago. So if the lecture was being recorded then, there migjt well be a howling gale in the background.

:) I kept having visions of Gilligan on Gilligan's Island blown sideways in a hurricane and Dorothy getting blown to Oz.
