" Conversion Therapy" (Australia, Again)

Well it's now a criminal offence to attempt "conversion therapy" in the ACT. This is ostensibly about banning gay conversion therapy--but (surprise, surprise!) it has slipped "gender identity" under the radar.

Proposed legislation:

Devlopments:

Passed legislation:

(Never would have thought I'd be agreeing The Australian, of all papers!)

Incredible, isn't it? The ACT Law Society tried to warn them about the unintended consequences and they've just ploughed on regardless.

A law professor and psychiatrist warning about consequences of this:

12 months jail for ACT parents seeking psychotherapeutic care for their ROGD child in Sydney?!

That's shocking.

BlackWaveComing · 28/08/2020 05:14

The complete mindfuck is that trans affirmation via blockers, social transition, cross sex surgery etc is often the conversion of a gay or lesbian GNC child into a straight-presenting, gender-conforming one.

I'm angry that the two things are linked in this bill.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 28/08/2020 07:14

They’ve proposed banning gay conversion therapy by legalising gay conversion therapy.

This ideology is utterly homophobic.

The major problems is that governments (civil servants) don''t know how to legislate on controversial subjects, so they hope the courts will sort out the issues.

That I think is why we have such issues with the GRA. Politicians are too lazy and leave the work to others without having good checks and balances in place. Especially sex/gender laws where everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon.

So. That is Qld and ACT sneaking this through during a pandemic. I get that QLD labor wanted to get it done before the election. Although, I believe they expect to win based on their covid response.

NotYourCisterinAus · 28/08/2020 11:03

Thinned- Not just legalised it: practically mandated it.
