Sorry, no share token. Guess this is about the Conservative Home article from yesterday?

“Conservative MPs who won seats in Labour’s northern heartlands last year have broken ranks to urge Boris Johnson to press ahead with plans to make it easier for people to change their gender, warning of a “new Section 28 moment”.”

@MillyMollyFarmer

I can say 100% the north does not support self ID. They need to focus on what matters up here. It’s not fucking pronouns.
Unfortunately there are a heck of a lot of councillors around the West Yorkshire area pushing this. The fact that we've got very large numbers of conservative religious women who would be excluded by mixed sex facilities doesn't seem to be considered.

But I wouldn't consider most of those MPs to be Northern anyway, unless you're going by the London definition...

Just asking as I am too lazy (i mean busy of course) to check, how many of those who signed are MPs for former Labour "safe" seats?

Just wondering if this is a result of the new woke Labour momentum types lobbying them.

And strange because on a talk show only a couple of days ago some political commentors he thought none of the new northern Tory constituents would think this was an issue of any importance.

RozWatching · 28/08/2020 16:11

Alicia Kearns is my MP. I've written to her twice. The first time I got a 'these are oppressed and vulnerable people' blah blah,no threat to the rights of women'. Talk about patronising! I wrote back,listing the threats to women and asking which women's and children's safeguarding groups she'd met with. Nothing.

Amazing. They are sooo concerned and righteous about this one group of people, but when you point out the vulnerability of women they lose interest. It's almost like they just want to be on the bandwagon.

TedsFederationRep · 28/08/2020 16:56

Here are the MPs who authored/signed the article on Conservative Home. Please, if you are a constituent, write to them. They have clearly been lobbied hard and we need to push back.

Agree with Fleegle. If you are a constituent, please please tell them what you think. None of those are my Conservative MP, who is indeed concerned about the threat to women's rights and the risk to children and who is in a position to reach those with real influence, but she still gets correspondence regularly from me reminding her to hold her ground.

There will always be dissenters in any party; I do not believe for one moment that every Labour, LibDem or SNP MP is pro-Self ID, but we know they have been lobbied hard and we need to counteract that.

New MPs are learning very quickly about the deafening volume of pure noise on social media but realising rather more slowly that Twitter and the like is in no way representative of mainstream opinion. Tell them. They cannot then legitimately claim in the HoC that they've only had messages in support of this ideology.

llangollen28 · 28/08/2020 17:01

Whilst those living in the north are not as portrayed by Londoners, I doubt if many support self-ID.

BovaryX · 28/08/2020 17:13

@Redshoeblueshoe

FFS do MPs ever talk to ordinary people ?
It really is incredible. Labour took a pounding for pandering to this nonsense. If the Conservatives follow suit? They need their heads examined.
TheFleegleHasLanded · 28/08/2020 17:39

Yes someone needs to buy a map.....

Nicola Richards (West Bromwich East), elected 2019, was a safe Labour seat
Alicia Kearns (Rutland and Melton), elected 2019 was a safe Conservative seat
Jamie Wallis MP (Bridgend), elected 2019, was a Labour seat, it was a tight contest.
Gary Sambrook (Birmingham Northfield), elected 2019, was a Labour seat, it was a tight contest.
James Sunderland (Bracknell), elected 2019, was a safe Conservative seat
Paul Holmes (Eastleigh), elected 2019, fairly safe Conservative seat but had been Lib Dem until 2015
Richard Holden (North-West Durham), elected 2019, first Conservative in the history of the seat.
Elliot Colburn (Carshalton and Wallington) elected 2019 with a tiny majority (I recall there were recounts) previously safe Lib Dem
Ben Everitt (Milton Keynes North), elected 2019, safe Conservative seat.

Apologies for getting both Elliot Colburn's name and constituency wrong in my original post, in my defence I did lift them straight from the article on Conservative Home!

Thanks TheFleegleHasLanded

Interesting to see.

Also, this is only 9 MPs out of a total of 364 Tories.

I think a lot is going to depend on other factors, such as will there be a 2nd wave, will there be a no deal Brexit

My worry is that because I think on one level the Tories dont care either way they may in a distracted way go with the trans lobby thinking they are more trouble than women. Sad

Helmetbymidnight · 28/08/2020 17:52

are they all under 40?

lots of men there too...

Melroses · 28/08/2020 17:56

@Ereshkigalangcleg

One of the MPs who signed this has used actual transphobic language in the past (not to mention the misogyny he combined it with, in this case):

Wow.

There's no saint like the reformed sinner. Again.

I will write to my MP, again.

Antibles · 28/08/2020 18:30

They have clearly been lobbied hard

The tentacles of this astonishingly well funded and well connected movement creeping in yet somewhere else. It's truly terrifying. It's like a storm surge and we are the sandbags.

Why must we all say men can be women? Why? Someone somewhere wants no borders, no boundaries. If 'men can be women', all reality is up for negotiation. I feel permanently gaslit these days.

persistentwoman · 28/08/2020 18:41

Have no idea about the male MPs mentioned but I believe that there are a significant number of new Tory MPs who are white gay men? That would explain some of the hostility towards women and our rights.
