The new release by Cardi B is just a male wet dream / porn addled spectacle that we've all to believe is empowering. It actually made me feel sick. Lyrics are basically along the theme of whores, wetness, having sex for money/cars, violent sex and god knows what else. So inspiring for young women... not.

Incoming comments if this were AIBU:

  1. You're a prude
  2. You're racist
  3. It's empowering
  4. Men do it all the time
FeedTheSparrows · 21/08/2020 10:00

I can't bear to listen to this - but have read the lyrics. Hate the fact young women may be duped into thinking this is how they should be.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 21/08/2020 10:12

There’s a couple of threads on this already. Not saying that you shouldn’t start your own, just that many have already engaged and you may have missed the boat! FWIW I haven’t seen/heard it but from all the comments I’ve read, it sounds like a steaming turd.

I was pleased to see on AIBU that they voted by a margin of 4 to one that drag is rubbish.

So I would be interested to see how this topic would be received there.

How can people not love lip synching in bad wigs?

zunchie · 21/08/2020 10:35

so what? if you don't want to listen to it, don't listen to it. songs like this are made all the time by men but when women make one it's suddenly disgusting and anti feminist. it really isn't a big deal, people like the song and the message. get over it.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/08/2020 11:03

songs like this are made all the time by men

What, men make songs about themselves being degraded , called whores, abused, or about prostituting themselves? What songs are these?

This - exactly this.
MarkRuffaloCrumble · 21/08/2020 11:11

Yup, men may ‘sing’ about sex and money, but they never imply that they have sex FOR money. And they rarely do it in their underwear.

Wondersense · 21/08/2020 11:34

Yes. It's incredibly empowering to grind dance for male titillation to the tune of 'there's some whores in this house'.

LillianBland · 21/08/2020 11:46

The MRAs and other assorted groups of creeps must be rubbing their hands with glee, that women are giving them exactly what they want. Well done women, for falling down the porn hole, straight into that big dark pool of perverse misogyny. You'll get lots of lovely warm adoration from the perverts and lib fems.

ArabellaScott · 21/08/2020 11:55

Second thread on this. Finally went and watched. Its boring and not very catchy. Also, video is ver tacky. I just think ew, cheap, crappy, queasy.

If you want edgy musicians that write about sex try Janaelle Monae, or Peaches. Both of them are at least good songs (former) and interesting (latter). And funny, too, sometimes. (Both also quite explicit and I suppose some people will find them offensive.)

the songs that men sing are just the same except they're degrading women, not themselves. some people find the lyrics empowering because songs like this generally aren't done by women, if you don't like it don't listen to it. i don't understand how it's such a big deal.

So it’s ok, because these women are singing songs about degrading themselves and other women by association. Basically, you’re happy that women are doing the men’s work for them? Hardly something to be proud about.

err so men degrading women = bad but women degrading women = good?
That's like saying men kill women wouldn't the world be great if women killed themselves.

yes it's ok. who are you to say what's ok and what isn't? if they want to sing about sex and getting money i don't really understand why they can't. at least it's them sexualising themselves and saying what they want to say. there are much worse songs, like robin thicke's blurred lines: 'good girl i know you want it i know you want it', 'tried to domesticate you but you're an animal','just let me liberate you','i hate these blurred lines i know you want it',
DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 21/08/2020 12:24

What I hate is when you are on SM you see posts from young girls (like late teens) talking/laughing about sex and its this sort of pornified/violent version of sex. Its all about pleasing men, gagging on their dick, being choked etc. Basically being abused and enjoying it

This song just perpetuates that, and tells girls they should enjoy sex like this

Men singing it I find equally disgusting, but a woman singing this shit teaches girls that this is actually enjoyable rather than a mans fantasy of what women enjoy. It teaches girls that its empowering rather than demeaning. And its not

I really hope you don’t work with children or young people, if you think that misogynistic shit is empowering. Try raising your standards and protecting women and girls, rather than bathing in misogyny. You’ll feel a lot cleaner for it.

Elsiebear90 · 21/08/2020 12:32

I have mixed feelings on this song tbh.

Good points for me:
Women singing about what they want and enjoy sexually
Women singing about and glorifying wet vaginas

Bad points for me:
Use of the word whores
I feel it’s aimed at titillating men, rather than empowering women
Describing having sex in exchange for an engagement ring etc
Describing sexual acts which are often seen in porn and women are pressured into performing

So yes mixed feelings, I’m glad that women are singing about a perfectly natural bodily function we have that normally we are shamed about or discourage from talking about, I’m also glad that they are singing about their own sexuality and what they enjoy, however, it’s massively let down by them pandering to the male gaze, objectifying themselves and playing into harmful stereotypes such as women who enjoy sex are whores, women like to be choked and deepthroat, women have sex in exchange for possessions etc.

Yeah, I think this si what's particularly annoying about it.

If you look at a song like Blurred Lines, you can say, well, maybe he thinks that she wants it, and maybe he wishes it were clearer, but there's actually a pretty good chance that he's wrong and wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole, he's just a hopeful idiot. Alternatively, maybe she's being coy and he finds that annoying which is fair enough. We don't know, in any case.

In this song, according to the empowerment lot, we're being asked to think that it's empowering for women to want to basically screw men for money and that's what Cardi B is saying.

That being said - it isn't always correct to assume that a song is telling us how things should be. I tend to think Cardi B does see it that way, because she's said so in interviews. But there are plenty of songs that take the POV of a character, and even ask us to enter into it in some way, without intending us to think that's it's how things should be. We can identify with the sort of obsessional thoughts of the guy in Every Breath You Take, as reflecting what is a common feeling after a break-up, without saying that it should empower people to become creepy stalkers.

it's my opinion that the song has worse lyrics. saying 'it's not ok' is different. if you don't like the song don't listen to it Smile

It’s not about what we want or don’t want to listen to, it’s about the message it sends to girls/young women about what they are worth and also gives boys/young men a very skewed idea of what females are/should be like. Is that so difficult for you to understand?

then don't let your kids listen to it. these types of songs have always been a thing but as soon as it's women doing it it's such a bad message and it's awful. get a grip.
