The new release by Cardi B is just a male wet dream / porn addled spectacle that we've all to believe is empowering. It actually made me feel sick. Lyrics are basically along the theme of whores, wetness, having sex for money/cars, violent sex and god knows what else. So inspiring for young women... not.

Catherine brilliant post, thank you for that Star

QuentinWinters · 22/08/2020 09:15

I talked about WAP yesterday with my kids. I think they use a lot of misogynistic language differently now - so "whores" doesn't mean prostitutes, it just means women having sex HmmEnvy

I think the song is lazy and playing on shock value for ££

I'm more disturbed by the accompanying tiktok dance that the girls are doing tbh

QuentinWinters · 22/08/2020 09:16

so "whores" doesn't mean prostitutes, it just means women having sex
I wonder if its like previous rappers calling themselves "nigga" - she's saying "you're going to insult me with whore anyway for enjoying sex, I'm taking ownership of the word for myself"

Still tho. It's not a good song.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 22/08/2020 14:04

Thank you HoneysuckIejasmine it's emotionally mostly in the past. But I get angry at what I see as a gradual attempt to soften up society with a view to exploiting children for sex.

so "whores" doesn't mean prostitutes, it just means women having sex

Lovely! I bet you you felt empowered during the conversation.

Well I guess it's a bit like the term 'Hoe' which might mean anything from a woman who cheats, to one who sleeps around to a woman offering sex in exchange for money. This is progress I supposeHmm

I guess its a question I'll have to ask my boys too. Lovely conversation. Thanks Cardi & Co., due to your selfless actions on behalf of women's sexual emancipation I feel soooo empowered.

@ArabellaScott

Second thread on this. Finally went and watched. Its boring and not very catchy. Also, video is ver tacky. I just think ew, cheap, crappy, queasy.

If you want edgy musicians that write about sex try Janaelle Monae, or Peaches. Both of them are at least good songs (former) and interesting (latter). And funny, too, sometimes. (Both also quite explicit and I suppose some people will find them offensive.)

Agree with all that. Peaches - is that the one where they sing fuck the pain away?

ArabellaScott · 23/08/2020 10:05

Yes, that's the one, Social. I have found sone of her songs genuinely shocking, but also thought provoking, funny and sometimes excellent. She writes a lot about female sexuality (I am guessing she might call it 'queer'). Some of her stuff is rubbish. But I think she is genuinely interested in pushing at boundaries to see what happens and what is possible.

SocialMedea · 23/08/2020 10:18

I'm 71..

Oh. My. God.

I have a mental picture of the regular posters here based on the username and little things said and the way they're said. It's probably highly inaccurate. Proof of that is my picture of you highame was someone early twenties, late teens even! Please don't take this the wrong way. I love your posts.

xx

@LillianBland

The MRAs and other assorted groups of creeps must be rubbing their hands with glee, that women are giving them exactly what they want. Well done women, for falling down the porn hole, straight into that big dark pool of perverse misogyny. You'll get lots of lovely warm adoration from the perverts and lib fems.
Exactly.
SocialMedea · 23/08/2020 10:21

Yes, the video for that Peaches song is excellent if I remember using old film footage...

(I am too timid to even try and insert a vid on here but I'd recommend people check it out.)

SocialMedea · 23/08/2020 10:24

Excellent posts from Lillian as per.

ArabellaScott · 23/08/2020 10:25

I recommend this one.

Lovely! I bet you you felt empowered during the conversation.
DD and I had a follow up yesterday whe she said Cardi b was a strong woman. I said that normalising choking during sex wasn't empowering and she said I just didn't get sex these days, thats what people like Shock
I said I was willing to bet very few women actually enjoyed it but I'm worried about her future sex life now if that's normal Sad

SocialMedea · 23/08/2020 15:29

... and she said I just didn't get sex these days, thats what people like...

She says "people" but I've never heard of women doing it to men, has she?

SunsetBeetch · 23/08/2020 16:29

Well that's about as sexy as a cup of cold sick, imo.

I can't believe it took 5 people to write it. 3 of whom are men. Yeah, totes empowering.

I hate it, but it has a good ‘cleaning music’ rhythm. Had it on the other day while scrubbing the stairs. Very libfem, indeed.

Goosefoot · 23/08/2020 19:10

@Iggypoppie

The male voice about wheres is really galling. Much better if it had been a female one, could've perhaps made it sound like a reclamation of the word. (Clutches at straws)
I think that part's sampled.
Justhadathought · 23/08/2020 19:19

The songs that men sing are just the same except they're degrading women, not themselves. some people find the lyrics empowering because songs like this generally aren't done by women, if you don't like it don't listen to it. i don't understand how it's such a big deal

If you don't think, or understand, how it may be a talking point, at least...what on earth are you doing on a women's rights board?

Justhadathought · 23/08/2020 19:25

It is fine to disagree with whether it is your preference but if it is being heralded as 'female empowerment', therein lies the issue for me

Reminds me of those interviews with 'sex workers' who say that 'sex work' is empowering. They were raped as children and then again as a teenager, but now, at least, they're getting money for it. Now they feel in control.

The point is that the abuse has totally shaped & defined what you now consider your method of control.

Justhadathought · 23/08/2020 19:29

What is empowering is the fact that the song is done by women who are openly talking about sex and not being degraded by some male rapper or singer in a different scenario

And yet the frames of reference have been entirely set by the fact degradation by male rappers. " Hey, look, I can do it to myself, and I don't need you to do it to me". A form of self harm, dressed up as empowerment.

Goosefoot · 23/08/2020 19:29

Ultimately though there can be a huge difference between what is empowering for an individual, and what is empowering for a group. Jeff Bezos is pretty empowered personally, his workers not so much, and their numbers keep growing the more empowered he becomes.

Justhadathought · 23/08/2020 19:29

by the fact of degradation by male rappers

Justhadathought · 23/08/2020 19:36

Yes, and "your bitch" is just another word for a woman or a girlfriend.....

Oblomov20 · 07/09/2020 20:27

How this is 'empowering' is beyond me. The lyrics are vile. Makes me very sad. Sad

bellinisurge · 07/09/2020 21:30

"Pull up to the bumper" by Grace Jones did this more stylishly and about 30 years ago.
