Brilliant analysis by Dr Julia Long of why seemingly harmless language used to appease transactivists obfuscates the power dynamics involved and hinders the gender critical movement as a whole.

Julia Long nailing the issue as usual.

If only we could use truthful and accurate language in a feminist forum. I am sick of
being made to pretend.

Nailed it!!

Language is so important. Even on here we have to obscure the truth by being careful with language and im sick of it tbh.

Its been done gradually but now they have come for the most basic of words and we are rapidly losing the ability to describe anything on a meaningful way

DaisiesandButtercups · 19/08/2020 14:38

Thanks for posting, this is really thought provoking and she makes excellent points.

SisterWendyBuckett I am with you on the problem of taboo language. Long ago I was told it is empowering to be able to speak plainly, accurately and openly about our bodies and the things which affect us as women. Sometimes I feel like I have woken up 20 years later in a dystopian parallel universe. Confused

Me too. It's absurd that we are being forced to go along with complete lies. It is psychological abuse. Coercive control.

blondie1412 · 19/08/2020 16:12

to expand her analysis in this video re language, plse check out her seminal article on 12/5/20..... '' A MEANINGFUL TRANSITION '' in UNCOMMON GROUND ''.....

Melroses · 19/08/2020 17:54

It is all about language control really.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 19/08/2020 17:54

Great video - thanks OP.

JL is a legend. There was a great YouTube clip where she argues against providing people with inaccurate pronoun preferences. It really opened my eyes.

I have already stopped using TW as a descriptor of males IRL but not on MN. When I did so, my post was removed.

Blondie thanks for referencing the article. I have read it before. Can’t be publicised enough.

This is good too - about how we use language and how it affects the way we think and perceive things.

SisterWendyBuckett · 19/08/2020 18:01

We could really get something going if we all told the truth.

Focusing on the ideology, not on individuals.

highame · 19/08/2020 18:39

I really like her but didn't find that particularly helpful. I realise she's speaking about Germany and therefore will the launch of a campaign but I really don't see how we can make this work here at the moment due to deletion. We'd never get anything said.

Language is extremely important and at least we're establishing that we do not accept the term cis and our challenge now is to make sure woman is front and centre. My other issue is that her way of addressing transwoman/transphobic is so complex I would need a few breaths mid sentence.

The more convoluted the wokesters make language, the more it will be rejected. We always revert to norms if it becomes too complex. Middle class, privileged, woke ideology isn't translating too well with the working class.

German is a more precise language and therefore things might be more clear cut anyway. Not sure. Can anyone translate what Julia says we should start with into German. If it's not simple, foget it

SisterWendyBuckett · 19/08/2020 19:16

The way to do it is to get the truth clear in your own head. Once you do that it becomes much easier. Then the words follow naturally.

Activists have tried to make everything deeply complicated but of course it's actually not. Facts are facts, get over it.

Where it does become difficult is when it becomes personalised. But we can hold two separate thoughts in our minds at once: adults have free will to make their own decisions and can believe and do what they want - good luck to them - but they don't have the right to compel my personal beliefs or to to force me to deny the truth.

In places where we are prevented from telling the truth, the gaslighting becomes normalised and we get entrenched in a position of defence. It's so energy sapping.

I say this as the mum of a medically transitioned daughter, who 3 years ago was still a happy young adult lesbian.

TheShoesa · 19/08/2020 21:25

There are phrases that we would get deleted for on here, but IRL situations I am going to try to be brave enough to use what she says at 5.35 if people refer to transwomen.
She is absolutely right that we need to be clear about the people we are talking about and I do think that the general public are still not up to speed regarding who was born female and who male when we talk about transwomen and transmen. I'm all for clarity

UkuleleRose · 19/08/2020 22:27

Semi-on point - I just filled out a work survey which asked my gender with "Gender is a social construct. My sex is female." I live in a very woke part of the US and my stomach is now in knots.

highame · 19/08/2020 22:45

@UkuleleRose isn't it sad that women can't speak out without feeling the sky is going to come crashing down Flowers

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/08/2020 11:07

Yes. It is possible to get around using the word "woman" in any sense for MTF trans people, where you can't be honest, and to not use pronouns. I realise Julia would like us to be even more direct but I think I get this sense across with the language I use. I stopped using transwoman etc about 3/4 years ago and feel so much better that I can be true to reality.

OP posts:
highame · 20/08/2020 11:17

@Ereshkigalangcleg do you just use MTF trans people? I could do that and feel better

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/08/2020 13:32

Yes. It's an official term.

OP posts:
ThinEndoftheWedge · 20/08/2020 17:35

Highame and Ereshkigangcleg

IRL I use the other three letter acronym which does not include the word women or female. (Not to be used on MN).

Factual and accurate.

As JL implies - anything with the words women/female belongs only to women and girls.
