The Government must reform the Gender Recognition Act based on self-declaration says GMB in letter to Liz Truss

GMB union has today written to the Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss around the Prime Minister’s recent remarks to halt reform of the Gender Recognition Act which would allow people to change their legal gender by self-declaration.

The letter asks the Government to reform the Gender Recognition Act based on self-declaration and urges them to do more to tackle discrimination against trans and non-binary people.

As a trade union we pride ourselves on being welcoming to all and with rising hate crime against trans people we have a responsibility to stand up for their right to live with dignity, privacy and respect, free from fear, isolation and discrimination in the workplace and wider society.

The GMB who offered to do a rights advice thread on MN and then pulled it because they didn't like what was being discussed on FWR?
The GMB who are up to their eyes in scandal about sexual harassment at national union level?
The GMB who are quoting a dodgy YouGov survey as some kind of blblical truth?
Over fifty per cent of their members are women.
They stopped speaking up and supporting women a long time ago.

gardenbird48 · 15/08/2020 19:53

with rising hate crime against trans people - I wish the people using this phrase actually understand what it refers to - in many cases using the Hate Crime laws as a tool of harassment against people that are absolutely not being hateful - just stating basic facts. Obviously if there is some actual basis to this claim and what Joe Public would understand as hatred is being spread I would absolutely stand corrected but I would be interested in seeing some analysis of the actual content of the accusations and number of sources.

The GMB who are up to their eyes in scandal about sexual harassment at national union level?

Very much this

BaronessWrongCrowd · 15/08/2020 19:59

Well they can Foxtrot Oscar. Women's rights are not theirs to give away.

highame · 15/08/2020 20:08

The Gender Misogynistic Bollocks, don't know of a union that truly supports women.

beargrass · 15/08/2020 20:14

I binned my subs to this mob long before it was fashionable to do so. They've not cared about women for a long, long time. And now we see that they also don't care about children either. This position isn't one that could represent a social worker who intervened because parents were pushing their child down the affirmation path, for example.

ruabon1 · 15/08/2020 20:37

You can be against hate crime and not support self declaration.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 15/08/2020 20:49

we have a responsibility to stand up for their right to live with dignity, privacy and respect, free from fear, isolation and discrimination in the workplace and wider society.

But not women’s of course.

The left is truly dissolving into a pool of piss.

SerenityNowwwww · 15/08/2020 20:55

We didn’t ask them...

SocialMedea · 15/08/2020 20:59

Well they can Foxtrot Oscar.

lol

FloresTorres · 15/08/2020 21:06

The left is truly dissolving into a pool of piss.
Isn't it just?

Impatiens · 15/08/2020 21:32

I'm sure Liz Truss will be riveted by everything the hopeless, Labour-affiliated GMB has to say.

MujeresLibres · 15/08/2020 22:43

Off topic, but does anyone know Unite's position on this please?

PopperUppleton · 15/08/2020 22:50

They can Foxtrot Romeo Oscar

FloresTorres · 15/08/2020 23:02

MujeresLibres Best place I can find the UNITE position is in this Morning Star link.
A long statement. Support self ID, TWAW and you can attend the Women's section. UNITE supports third spaces but also respects Women's spaces. It's an interesting read!

TitianaTitsling · 15/08/2020 23:05

Our unite rep wears many unite provided referred pronoun badges..

MujeresLibres · 15/08/2020 23:11

Thanks Flores and Titiana.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 16/08/2020 09:46

You’re right, Flores, it is an interesting read. Unite supports self-ID, but seems to be trying to square the circle with female members’ rights and needs.

“Unite’s women’s structure supports women only spaces in addition to gender neutral spaces and is particularly concerned that our trans members should be protected the from harassment and violence they face from the lack of gender neutral space.”
Does this mean TW would only be welcome in gender-neutral space, not in women’s spaces? That seems to be what Unite is saying, and it would be safer for women. But it doesn’t seem likely, because TW want access to women’s spaces.

The most hopeful part is “will defend our members against any homophobic, transphobic or sexist hate language or abuse. Unite also believes that our members have the right to freedom of speech and that we have the right to disagree.“ Let’s hope Unite upholds that right to disagree.

LockdownLump · 16/08/2020 10:03

Absolute joke coming from the GMB.

Could not give less of a shit about women if they tried.

merrymouse · 16/08/2020 10:12

www.gmb.org.uk/history

"At the heart of building our union was our co-founder Eleanor Marx, a socialist trade union activist and daughter of Karl Marx."

Now scroll down and look at the list of general secretaries. They all seem to have something in common, but in this gender fluid modern age I can't quite put my finger on it...

littlbrowndog · 16/08/2020 10:20

Merry. Are they MEN 😂😂😂

littlbrowndog · 16/08/2020 10:22

Just looked. MEN all of them

FloresTorres · 16/08/2020 10:24

My first union was the GMB/APEX. My first dispute, as a young woman, was at Grunwick in the mid seventies, which has passed into labour history.

That kind of organising of women factory workers, mostly migrant women of Indian heritage, I doubt we will ever see from the GMB of today.

Yet we see in Leicester,( for example) that these places still very much exist.

The likes of the GMB, (full time, very well paid, national officers) would rather sit safely at a desk, writing half arsed letters to Liz Truss, than get off their backsides and get out and organise in these modern sweatshops.

No contest on what's easier to do. Talk the talk or walk the walk. GMB is a woke talking shop, with very little grass roots organising going on. Members contributions, pissed up the wall, in national officer big pay offs. Because scandal. We see you.

Yes. thinkingaboutLangCleg, you picked up the attempt to try and square the circle. I thinks that's a good description of what's been going on there in UNITE. That statement really tells a story.

SunsetBeetch · 16/08/2020 10:27

Oh FUCK OFF.

FloresTorres · 16/08/2020 10:28

I thinks Grin. Blimey!. I sound like Popeye!

Littlebrowndog Yay. I missed you. I'm your secret fan club.Flowers
