Julie Birchill on why the press has been fairly quiet on Eric Joyce

She pulls no punches in this article on the Eric Joyce and why the media hasn't gone for him. She's right that we hadn't heard much about how bad the stuff he was looking at was.

I thought Burchill wrote a great article and you can't be blistering enough about pedophiles and their apologist spouses. Fuck them.

userbbb · 12/08/2020 16:58

This is why people criticise the lefties, it's the hypocrisy. Imagine if this was a Tory MP, certain "journalists" would be all over it but instead radio silence. Also if your going to criticise & insult other people they will retaliate & pull out your skeletons.
It doesn't matter what your political persuasion is this is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Janaih · 12/08/2020 17:24

Burchill has the sharpest mind and tongue of anyone, ever. Bloody love her work.

stumbledin · 12/08/2020 18:16

What is a really important issue is lost in Burchill just being personally spiteful.

There are so many points to be raised about the way the media cover up for one of their own (eg Boris Johnson) and nepotisim not just in the media but in politics.

But this article just makes it a sort public cat fight.

I thought she had grown out of these teenage operatics.

Hopefully a grown up will cover the situation and people will pay attenton - but then again probably not.

Floisme · 12/08/2020 18:26

I take your point but the grown ups have had nearly a week to cover this situation and yet show no inclination to do so.

Say what you like about Burchill but she's fearless.

Thehollyandtheirony · 12/08/2020 18:29

Brilliant article.
I have no doubt that Burchill despises the perpetrator most of all but this article is about the lack of reporting so his well-connected journalist OH is certainly relevant.

Clymene · 12/08/2020 18:36

India Knight is choosing to live in a house with her child and a man who who watches babies being raped for kicks.

She deserves everything Burchill throws at her.

A former MP (with a criminal record of multiples assaults and drink driving and the HoC highest claimant in the expenses scandal) has been charged with having child rape images of the very worst category and has received a suspended sentence. There should be an outcry.

It's incredibly sinister.

borntobequiet · 12/08/2020 18:36

She’s vindictive and spiteful and unfortunately her detestation of India Knight (who is at best a mediocre columnist and novelist) overwhelms her rightful condemnation of Joyce.

Clymene · 12/08/2020 18:39

@Goosefoot - porn advocates argue that the participants are consenting. By calling child rape and abuse porn, it normalises it. It's not porn. It's rape and abuse.

PearPickingPorky · 12/08/2020 18:50

I also felt uncomfortable reading it, because so much of the cheap shots were needlessly nasty, when the fact she's continuing a relationship with a man who watches infants being brutally raped, then uses her powers to suppress the story, are enough of an indictment in themselves.

Still, I'm very glad Julie wrote it because I had no idea Joyce and Knight were together.

Goosefoot · 12/08/2020 18:51

No, they argue they can be consenting.

Even porn advocates know it is possible to make porn with non-consenting people who are coerced or enslaved, and many would say that should clearly be quite illegal.

Language is helpful to express ourselves and the word pornography is a useful word that appeared in response to the technological development of photography. There is no benefit to substituting "sexual images" for "pornography".

MrsNoah2020 · 12/08/2020 19:41

but I thought it a bit unnecessary to suggest that IK was enough to turn her first husband gay

It's a joke/self-own, though, because Burchill also 'turned gay' - she left her husband for a woman.

NiceGerbil · 12/08/2020 19:47

The specifying what some of his searches were and what a video involved is really important.

Why is he not in prison.

And why are the papers being so coy about what he viewed.

Abhannmor · 12/08/2020 20:03

I was a bit confused by the phrase ' making images' at first thinking it was a kind of photoshop. Have I got this all wrong?

MindTheMinotaur · 12/08/2020 20:17

Making images usually means downloading and therefore creating a copy, I think.

NiceGerbil · 12/08/2020 20:58

It's a poorly worded part of the law for internet days I think.

It means viewing/ downloading I think (?).

But definitely not taking the actual photos or videos in real life.

I can't get over what he searched. That really needs to be out in the public domain widely.

stumbledin · 12/08/2020 23:19

What is disturbing if it is true (and I dont know the personal details of the 2 people concerned) is that India Knight has a young daughter.

I dont want to be part of throw accusations at her, but lets assume she didn't know about Joyce's perversions. But if so, even if she does it quietly, she cant possible think it appropriate to have in their lives a man convicted of using child pornography ie creating the demand that encourages pornographers to abuse children.

Although she didn't do it immediately but once that MP in Kent (I think) was convicted his wife said she was going to divorce him.

I'm going to get off my butt and donate to Spiked. They're publishing the feminists the so-called liberal media won't.

PelicanDeuce · 13/08/2020 01:21

Julie is brilliant and prolific on Facebook. Someone on there made the very interesting point that, having worked with child sex offenders for years, there are two very clear patterns. They will deliberately pursue older women to throw people off the scent and women with disabled children who might be less able to tell anyone they are being abused.

Well kerching Mr Joyce.

Oh and yes Burchill and Bindel are friends who get on well.

DidoLamenting · 13/08/2020 06:49

I read this on Spiked and initially thought the personal attacks on IK undermined the article but on a second reading, no , it's fair comment.

An aside, JB included a link to this article. I missed it at the time but good grief IK is utterly tone deaf here.

I had no idea they were together even after first reading that article. Does it ever mention that they are a couple or give the connection between them? It refers to her ‘husband Jeremy Langmead’, without saying he’s an ex.

It gave me the feeling of overhearing acid gossip about a random stranger rather than an insight into why this woman would be protecting the man.

Igneococcus · 13/08/2020 07:07

I read that article at the time, I might even have commented, and it annoyed me too.
I needed to supply additional documentation, my MP got involved at some point, but the decision not to apply for British citizenship and to be in that situation despite having lived here for almost 19 years now is entirely mine (I might still do it). Applying for work visa for NZ and the USA involved more paperwork than the application for settled status and in the case of NZ, a chest X-ray. IK has no idea.

Good piece from Julie. I can't believe that some people here are having a pop at her. She is the only voice pointing this out. That couple are vile. This is about the horrific abuse of children and the subsequent minimising of this shameful episode. But hey let's quibble about Julie's tone or style or some bullshit.
